KOLKATA: Kolkata experienced the coldest day of the season on Sunday with the minimum temperature plummeting to 10.8 degree, four degrees below normal. It was the coldest February 3 in 28 years.

For Kolkatans used to rather warm winters over the last few years, the sudden chill has come as a surprise. Heavy woollens that had been packed into cupboards have been pulled out again.

There are bigger crowds around tea stalls. No one expected the cold snap to return in February but no is complaining either.

A combination of western disturbances and wind patterns have resulted in a late revival of winter, say weathermen. "Most of northern India is now under a spell of severe cold wave. Chilly winds are blowing all over the northern plains, including Bihar and Jharkhand. The flow of dry, chilly wind from our neighbouring states has brought the temperature down in Kolkata and Gangetic West Bengal. It is unusual at this time of the year," said G C Debnath, director of the Alipore Meteorological office. The last time Kolkata had such a cool February was way back in 1980.

The cold spell is on its wane, though. "The chill should disappear within a day or two and the mercury will start climbing from Monday," added Debnath.

Though the sudden drop in temperature was termed as unusual, weathermen refused to accept that it had been a warm winter this time. They pointed out that January was cooler than previous years.

On an average, the temperature hovered at least four degrees below normal. The maximum temperature on Sunday was 24 degrees, four below normal.

When I was traveling a lot to Germany, I used the rule of thumb "double the temperature and add 32", which works pretty well around mid-range temperatures. Using that rule of thumb, 0 = 32, 100 = 232 (rather than 212) and 10.8 = 21.6+32 or 53.6. Close enough for government work.
