Ship with sick crewmen to dock in New Orleans tonight
Posted 4:23 PM, September 17, 2014, by Tanya Sinkovits, Updated at 04:45pm, September 17, 2014

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - A ship with three sick crewmen is scheduled to dock in New Orleans tonight, the Center for Disease Control confirms.

CDC officials said they received word earlier today that a ship which had traveled near where the Ebola outbreak is will dock at the New Orleans port.

A CDC staff member, emergency workers and members of the U.S. Coast Guard will board the boat and transport the ill crewman to a local hospital for evaluation.

No word on which hospital the crewman will be transported to.

The CDC said they are taking extra precaution because of a possible risk of Ebola, but that is thought to be ?exceedingly low.?..

NEW ORLEANS -- ...

A state official told WWL-TV this afternoon that the ship alerted state and U.S. health officials that three of the crewmen are sick.

The official says that a radio transmission from the ship reported symptoms that appear to be similar to malaria, an illness spread by mosquitoes.

The official also told WWL-TV the boat originated in Africa and is last known to have ported in Panama. The CDC confirms that The New Orleans Emergency Operations Center has been alerted.

CDC confirms the ship did also make a stop in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which currently has Ebola cases. The CDC will be boarding the ship with the Coast Guard and State Health Officials.

NEW ORLEANS ?Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said at least one person was taken from a ship that arrived from Africa to the West Jefferson Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Others from the ship may be transported, Nungesser said.

Officials in New Orleans confirmed that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Coast Guard and various government epidemiologists were at the scene in Belle Chasse, where the vessel, identified as the Marine Phoenix, docked at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.

The Marine Phoenix is a refrigerated cargo vessel flagged out of the African nation of Liberia. The 20-year-old ship weigh more than 7,000 tons and has more than 400 cubic feet of space.

According to a release from the CDC, the ship was reported to have traveled to a port in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and others in Africa.

Critically ill person taken from ship in Belle Chasse

WWLTV.com 6:30 p.m. CDT September 17, 2014

NEW ORLEANS -- A critically ill person was taken from a ship in Belle Chasse and taken to West Jefferson hospital by an ambulance staffed with personnel in Haz Mat suits Wednesday afternoon.

The ship, that was destined for New Orleans, was anchored in Belle Chasse. The Centers for Disease Control and Coast Guard officials were slated to go on to the ship.

The patient taken off of the ship was said to be critical, according to Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser. He said that another 1 to 3 people were ill on the ship and were being evaluated for possible movement to West Jefferson Hospital.

The ship, the Marine Phoenix, originated in Africa and docked for a short time in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an outbreak of Ebola has been plaguing that area.

A state official told WWL-TV the ship has been anchored near Belle Chasse since 1 p.m.

"I think it's standard procedure in this era of an outbreak in West Africa of Ebola," said Dr. Fred Lopez of the LSU Health Sciences Center. "Anyone coming out of that area of the world with these symptoms should be examined by health care professionals."

Re: Ship with sick crewmen to dock in New Orleans tonight

I wonder if the ship returned to Monrovia (its home port) in recent weeks, or if any of the crew were on leave.

Re: Ship with sick crewmen to dock in New Orleans tonight

Re: Ship with sick crewmen to dock in New Orleans tonight

That was my thought too when I saw where the home port of the ship was. Could it have been there in the last 3 weeks. If that was NOT the case (docking in Monrovia) and there is Ebola on that ship, it's extremely concerning. I didn't think the DRC was in that bad shape with it's outbreak.

Re: Ship with sick crewmen to dock in New Orleans tonight

Report from council member W. Jefferson Parrish says first and second tests indicate malaria. And "A sick occupant on the vessel got off before the ship left the Bahamas. The occupant which was in a progressed unhealthy state died and the determined cause was Malaria NOT Ebola."

Re: Ship with sick crewmen to dock in New Orleans tonight

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is restricted to inland DRC in the northwestern portion of the country. No cases have been reported from the eastern seaports in the DRC.

At its average speed, and assuming no layover in Panama, the Marine Phoenix could have traveled from an eastern seaport in DRC to New Orleans in 18-20 days.

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts sent out a tweet Wednesday night saying that initial tests on the sick crew members on board a ship from Africa indicate that they are suffering from malaria.

Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills and flu-like illness. It is not contagious.

The Liberian-flagged "Marine Phoenix," a refrigerated cargo vessel, docked in Belle Chasse Wednesday evening, and all on board were hospitalized.

Malaria identified as cause of illness on ship docked in New Orleans

By Jonathan Bullington, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

Federal health officials have identified malaria as the cause of an illness that hospitalized at least one crew member aboard a ship docked Wednesday evening in New Orleans.

Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts said the Centers for Disease Control updated parish officials with the information Wednesday night, as at least one crew member of the Liberian-flagged ship, "Marine Phoenix," tested positive for the potentially fatal mosquito-born disease while at West Jefferson Medical Center.

Two other ship occupants were also at West Jefferson, Roberts said. But he was uncertain whether they tested positive for malaria.
...
According to Roberts, the CDC told Jefferson Parish officials that one of the ship's occupants disembarked in the Bahamas and later died from malaria.

Joint Statement from DHH and the CDC Regarding Illness of Cargo Ship Crew Member

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 | Contact: Media & Communications: Phone: 225.342.1532, E-mail: dhhinfo@la.gov

Baton Rouge, La.?CDC, along with local and federal officials, responded today to a report of illness on a ship at the Port of New Orleans. Earlier today, local EMS transferred three of the ship?s crew members to a local hospital. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) confirmed a positive test result this evening for malaria in the patient being treated at a New Orleans-area hospital. DHH shared this information with CDC and local officials. The other two patients had mild symptoms and are being assessed. Another ill crew member disembarked in the Bahamas two days ago, where he was diagnosed with malaria and later died. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes and does not spread from person to person. Approximately 1500-2000 cases are reported every year in the United States, almost all in recent travelers.

The ship?s itinerary included Matadi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), in addition to other ports. Based on a hospital?s request, CDC conducted testing on the crew member who died, and the results showed that this crew member was negative for the type of Ebola that is causing the current outbreak in West Africa. Ebola is not suspected as a cause of the other crew members? illnesses. No crew members had known exposures to Ebola.

CDC will continue to work closely with the hospital and local health authorities.
