Sherburne County man's death is flu-related
By Frank Lee ? fclee@stcloudtimes.com ? December 2, 2009

The Minnesota Department of Health reported Wednesday that 10 more Minnesotans have died of the flu, including a Sherburne County man, even as influenza activity continues to drop.

These latest deaths bring the total number of influenza-related deaths to 45 since April, including 39 confirmed as H1N1 novel influenza. Seven of the deaths announced Wednesday were due to H1N1 novel influenza.
It is unknown whether the Sherburne County victim succumbed to the H1N1 strain or a seasonal flu.
?The death in Sherburne County was an individual in their 60s who had an underlying health condition who was not hospitalized,? said Doug Schultz, a spokesman for the Minnesota Department of Health.
?In the case from Sherburne County, it was influenza, A-type, unspecified, which typically means we didn?t actually get a swab or a specimen to test in our labs, so we can?t say for sure if it was H1N1-related,
? Schultz said.
One of the deaths was due to seasonal influenza type B. It contributed to the death of a child from northwestern Minnesota who had underlying health conditions. The October death is the first in a child associated with influenza B this season, according to the department.
The eight other deaths announced Wednesday by the department included residents of Anoka, Dakota, Washington and Winona counties, and two residents of Hennepin County and two residents of St. Louis County. The 10 deaths announced Wednesday occurred from Oct. 27-Nov. 19. Those who died ranged in age from a child younger than 9 to an adult in their 90s. All but two of the 10 newly reported deaths occurred in people known to have underlying health conditions.
