Samples from two Shenzhen wet markets have tested positive for the H7N9 bird flu virus that has infected two people in Hong Kong.

Confirmation of the test findings came two days after the municipal government said the border city could not be confirmed as the source of the outbreak...

...The infected samples were among 70 collected on Tuesday from 13 wet markets across the city. An infected blood sample came from a chopping board at a stall selling live poultry at the Henggang market. The other two were found in chicken excrement and a plucking machine from a stall at the Kangqiao market in the Nanwan neighbourhood...

Hong Kong, Secretary for Food and Health on avian influenza A(H7N9)

Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after attending a public function this morning (December 12):

Secretary for Food and Health:

??The Centre for Health Protection has received notification that (three) specimens from two live poultry markets in Shenzhen were tested positive for the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus.

??I think this is an evidence further supporting experts' opinion that part of the live poultry in Shenzhen has already been infected with the virus.

??But up to this stage, there is no concrete evidence to substantiate the direct relationship between these positive specimens and the source of infection of the two human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Hong Kong.

??Therefore, we will maintain the arrangement to suspend live poultry import from Shenzhen farms for the time being.

??Serology test is a more sensitive test (used to) detect the antibodies of the poultry, which gives us an idea of how wide the virus is spreading among the poultry population.

??The test, however, has its own limitation as well. Because even there are specimens tested positive (for the virus) in the serology (test), we cannot draw a direct conclusion that the live poultry (in question) would be infectious.??

Secretary for Food and Health:

??I think experts have pointed out that the positive finding of the (avian influenza A)H7N9 virus in the environmental specimens from two Shenzhen markets actually highlighted the possibility that sporadic human cases (of infection) after contacting poultry will continue.

??However, up to this moment, there is no evidence showing that the virus is being transformed into a shape that it can be sustainably transmitted among humans.??

Re: Shenzhen - live poultry market - specimens checked out positive H7N9 avian influenza virus

At this point, a silly reader and I together may ask to some of these Shenzhen authorities a small, idiot question:

''How many live chickens worths a human life?''

Because, at the end of this infinite media fanfare about the three environmental samples tested positive for the H7N9 virus at the live poultry market, the only reasonable action - if the purpose is to save as many humans as possible - is to close (at least for some weeks, if not permanently) these wet markets until the source of the virus has been cleared.

This, obviously, if the human life is weighed as even little more important than poultry producers economic interests.

I think it is completely insane to keep wet markets open at this joint, since the risk of H7N9 human infections is too high, with the major seasonal influenza outbreaks incoming and plentyful opportunity for the novel avian virus to reassort during dual infections in human and in animals.

Re: Shenzhen - live poultry market - specimens checked out positive H7N9 avian influenza virus

Giuseppe - whilst I agree with you on the one hand, on the other we have to recognise that food supply infrastructure in many regions of China is simply not geared to providing ready killed and prepared poultry and there would be major issues and impacts on food security in a very short timeframe following widespread wet market closures.

Most individuals do not have refridgeration, and nor do vendors - so it would be nigh on impossible to ensure an adequate 'cold chain' to avoid widespread outbreaks of salmonella and similar health issues, which are equally life threatening in the short term. It has not been part of their culture and cannot be changed, literally, overnight.

It is a problem that needs addressing, but even if a western style cold chain and refridgeration system is adopted it will require both cultural change and adequate finance to put into place. A fridge may well be beyond the means of the majority in many areas.

University of Hong Kong microbiologist Ho Pak-leung said he believed the deadly virus was already spreading in Guangdong and the surrounding areas.

He urged Hong Kong to halt live poultry imports from the mainland. At present, only imports from three Shenzhen farms are suspended. Ho said the Longgang markets may have been responsible for the infection of 36-year-old Indonesian domestic helper Tri Mawarti, who may have handled a live chicken at a flat in Nanwan Street, near one of the infected markets.

The second Hong Kong patient is an 80-year-old who was recently in Shenzhen. The Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection said he had not handled live chickens. His family bought a slaughtered chicken near Fuyong in Baoan district, far from where the positive samples were found.
