Shasta County resident dies from H1N1 complications

A woman in her 60s with multiple underlying health problems is the first Shasta County resident to die from complications of the H1N1 influenza virus, public health officials said today.

The woman died in late October, but her case could not be counted as probable H1N1 until laboratory tests were completed, officials said.

She had underlying health problems that likely contributed to her death, officials said.

Health officials didn?t disclose the woman?s identity or the location in which she died.

The woman is the second in Shasta County to die of H1N1.

In August, a 52-year-old Washington woman died from swine flu at a Redding hospital.

Shasta County has received reports of 39 cases of H1N1 in which victims had to be hospitalized, officials said.

The woman died in late October, but her case could not be counted as probable H1N1 until laboratory tests were completed.v We would like to express our deepest sympathy to this patient's family, said Shasta County Health Officer Andrew Deckert. Pandemic H1N1 is spreading throughout our community, and although most patients do not become ill enough to require medical attention, this virus should be taken very seriously.

Tehama County reported any confirmed H1N1 deaths.

Since this pandemic began in the spring, Shasta County has received reports of 39 cases of H1N1 that had to be hospitalized. The highest hospitaliza-tion rate nationally has been in children ages 5 and younger.

Vaccine for H1N1 is available in limited quantities through private health care providers and Tehama County Public Health, and more vaccine is expected over the next few weeks.

Priority is being given to those at highest risk health care workers, children ages 18 and younger, pregnant women and people who care for babies younger than six months of age.

Others will be able to receive the vaccine as more becomes available.
