Strong quakes are more likely to occur in the Puget Sound area, Steele said. But they?re not unknown east of the mountains. The strongest known quake in Washington history is an approximately 7.0 magnitude shake at Earthquake Point near Entiat in 1872. That quake caused landslides that temporarily blocked the Columbia River, according to historical reports.
