Dakar to host regional meeting on bird flu
Dakar, Senegal 05/11 - The Regional Office of the International Federation of the Red Cross is to hold a two-day regional meeting here from Thursday on avian flu and its ramifications on health, the organisers said in a statement in the Senegalese capital Tuesday.
"Despite the international community's efforts to stop the disease, experts have observed that the influenza is dangerously spreading in the region," the statement said.
The Regional Office of the Red Cross decided to organise this meeting based on the evolving situation in West and Central Africa with a view to setting up "a common strategy at the regional level," it added.
Participants from Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d`Ivoire, Mali, Benin, Senegal, Switzerland, Finland, Germany, Norway, and Sweden will attend the meeting to define the role of grassroots population and volunteers, and the responsibility of the Red Cross in the control of the pandemic.
