" We are not dealing with a disease that can be transmitted from person to person. It is not like Covid-19 or other diseases that can be transmitted from person to person. This disease can be transmitted either directly through a mosquito bite, or through contact with livestock. Therefore, the equivalence of human-to-human transmission must be very clearly removed ," Dr. Ibrahima Sy said during a press conference on Monday, October 20.

To contain the disease, the minister announced a vaccination campaign for livestock – particularly small ruminants – and an awareness campaign to avoid contact with sick or dead animals, and to go to the nearest health center in case of fever.

This mission follows the confirmation of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) cases in goats.

Led by Dr. Mamadou Lamine Diallo, Regional Director of Livestock for Kolda, the delegation first held an information session with local leaders before presenting the CRGE's action plan to the press. This plan is currently awaiting approval from the Governor and emphasizes awareness, prevention, and emergency treatments to prevent any spread of the virus .

As soon as the cases were confirmed, a departmental team, led by livestock technical officer Thomas Thiaw, took immediate action:

-Treatment and spraying of infected animals with mosquito repellent products;

-Isolation of sick animals to break the chain of transmission;

-Vaccination of neighboring herds;

-Raising public awareness about the precautions to take.

Residents received strict instructions:

-Do not consume meat from sick animals;

-Pasteurize the milk before consumption;

-Sleep under impregnated mosquito nets;

-Destroy the larval sites by weeding the village.

The village chief, Mahamadou Diao, assured the authorities of his community's full cooperation:

"Here, we have no tradition of consuming goat's milk, nor of selling a sick animal. In our tradition, any village struck by an epidemic is isolated."

The CRGE emphasizes the need for vigilance, as Kandiaye is located less than 15 km from Diaobé, a large livestock market frequented by traders from The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Guinea-Conakry. The risk of cross-border spread is therefore real.
