The measles epidemic raging in Senegal has not spared the department of Kaolack where seven cases have been reported. This is what the chief doctor of the eponymous district revealed this Tuesday, on the sidelines of a workshop for the local press on the new vaccination schedule.
Seven cases of measles were, in fact, diagnosed in the commune of Kaolack and more than 6,000 children were vaccinated. The announcement was made by the head doctor of the Kasnack health district, Doctor Niène Seck, on the sidelines of a training workshop for journalists on the new vaccination schedule.
“We had to carry out a vaccination response in five health posts in the commune of Kaolack and Kahone last week. This is what allowed us to vaccinate more than 6,000 children aged 6 to 59 months, to help stem the epidemic. Because we know that it is a contagious disease which can cause deaths and complications among victims,” informed the practitioner who was speaking on the sidelines of a capacity building workshop for journalists and other players in the sector on the vaccination schedule.
According to Dr. Seck, “vaccination is a public health intervention implemented since 1979 and which has produced significant results in the fight against preventable diseases for the population. This is why we considered it useful to guide media actors in relation to the new vaccination schedule in order to facilitate communication in their professional activities,” he said.
This capacity building workshop for journalists is being held in the context of the implementation of the Expanded Immunization Program (EPI) in the Kasnack health district, particularly with regard to measles with the reported cases.
