It seems to me the primary reason we don't see more of this is due to economic resources of the population. I can think of at least one very important motive for boarding a plane, even when in pain, and that would be in search of a better health care system. At the very least, one that still has capacity to treat you - but ideally one in an advance country.

The model that predicts non-travel just due to the effects of Ebola just doesn't make sense to me.

Human behavior trumps.
