Dengue has once again appeared in northern Senegal where 11 confirmed cases were detected this week in Ross Béthio, a town located around thirty kilometers from the city of Saint-Louis. Overwhelmed, the health authorities however say they have good control of the situation.
Psychosis has set in for a few days in Ross Béthio, a town known as an agricultural and business area where the secondary health center has suddenly become practically the busiest place in the area.
According to the head doctor of the secondary health center of Ross Béthio, which polarizes the commune as well as many other villages, 587 people were consulted in the space of a week, including 226 hospitalized. A record, assures Dr Djibril Sow, who said that numerous samples were taken from patients who, for the most part, suffered from joint pain and fever. Among these samples sent to the laboratory for analysis, 11 came back positive, reveals Dr Sow.
According to him, the results of 10 new samples are still awaited. The head of the Ross Béthio secondary health center, at the same time, explained that the health structure experienced a difficult situation this week, with an excessive number of consultations which meant that they were obliged, at times, to putting two patients on a bed, and an overwhelmed and tired staff. However, he reassures, the situation remains under control to the extent that all the patients have been well taken care of. The 11 patients who tested positive are currently being treated and are not in danger, even if for some, the assessment revealed some disturbances, Dr Sow also informed. However, health personnel are somewhat alone in the fight to the extent that the municipal authorities, who have already been warned of the situation, have still not given any sign of life. Furthermore, the Hygiene Service is expected soon for interventions which should make it possible to eradicate the mosquitoes carrying dengue fever.
Dengue fever, also called "tropical flu", is an infectious disease caused by the virus of the same name. The virus is transmitted to humans by the Aedes, a mosquito living in clear waters. In the past, the North has experienced similar epidemics which were quickly brought under control by the health authorities.
