The progression of Coronavirus disease is on an upward slope with to date, 278 positive cases, even if the cure rate is more than satisfactory. The new thing is that Touba is back, with a new community case, after 11 days without any manifestation of the disease
As of April 11, 2020, there are 278 cases of Coronavirus infected in Senegal, since March 2, the date of the first appearance of the disease in the country. This is evident from the statistics released today by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, which show 13 positive cases out of 173 tests carried out. And among the positive cases, 12 are follow-up contact cases and 1 case resulting from community transmission.
Thus, after two days of absence, community cases, which constitute a real problem and a real risk, begin to reappear. The community case of the day was recorded in Touba, who returned after 11 days of calm. He is an OCAS market trader, father of a family of 15. It is feared in any case, the birth of a new bed of the disease at the level of the religious city, community cases having a very complex character, especially since everywhere in the country, life goes on as if nothing was, without any exceptional measure.
For Dr Aloyse Diouf Director of Cabinet of the Minister of Health and Social Action, community cases show that the virus circulates within the community, hence the need for a change of paradigms, in the strategies of responds, by adapting the case definition, to the current situation. Beyond Touba, there is the locality of Goudiry, in the region of Tambacounda, which constitutes a really delayed, within the framework of the dissemination of Covid-19.
In this locality, the "zero case" infected at least five people. And according to the daily L’AS, "among the 15 cases tested positive on Friday, April 10, 2020, the 5 are from Goudiry, family members and contacts of the religious leader. More than 300 other people are confined to the area with serious risks especially since ten days earlier, I. Kane had lost his mother. Respected religious leader, it goes without saying that many people expressed their condolences to him. The risk of spread is real, in this area where people have not yet become aware of the danger. "
Guest of IGFM, Dr. Cheikh Sokhna, Biologist, Epidemiologist, Director of research in a local company, Team leader at the Institut Hospitalier Universitaire (IHU) in Marseille led by Pr Didier Raoult, believes that the circulation of the virus is not yet intense in the country and in Africa, unlike European countries. But in his eyes, it is clear that all the positive cases have not yet been detected, due to the lack of logistical means. It is the active detection which makes it possible to better apprehend the situation and not the passive detection hitherto practiced.
According to him, it is also clear that the fight against Covid-19 is making great strides in Senegal and the first tangible result is the drop, even the disappearance of imported cases. However, he said, if you are careful, contact cases and community cases are likely to keep the epidemic in the country. In any case, Senegal is doing well for the moment in terms of therapeutic management with 152 cured out of the 278 positive cases, while 123 are currently under treatment.
