Location: Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Event: The U.S. Embassy in Kinshasa alerts U.S. citizens of protests occurring outside of embassy installations in Kinshasa. We advise U.S. citizens to shelter in place and avoid movements in Kinshasa.

The embassy has received reports of roadblocks, small fires, and large crowds throwing rocks and attacking vehicles throughout Kinshasa. Expect additional police checkpoints throughout the city and heavier traffic.

The embassy advises U.S. Citizens to keep a low profile and limit their movements. Even non-violent protests can change suddenly, so the embassy advises U.S. citizens to avoid crowds and gatherings.

The Consular Section will be closed to the public on January 28, 2025. All Consular appointments are cancelled, and rescheduling instructions will be communicated via email and phone call to those who had appointments.

  • S. citizens are reminded that demonstrations that may start peacefully have the potential to turn violent with little to no warning, and they are advised to avoid large gatherings, protests, and affected areas.

  • Review your personal security plans and ensure your family has enough food and water should you need to stay home for several days.
  • Keep a low profile.

The Red Cross voiced alarm Tuesday over the risk that fighting in the besieged DR Congo city of Goma could cause samples of Ebola and other pathogens held in a laboratory to escape.
