The first case of swine flu has been confirmed in the Irish Republic in a person who recently returned from Mexico, health experts confirmed.

The Chief Medical Officer said laboratory test results, previously reported as probable influenza A (H1N1), have now been confirmed. The patient, who has been taking anti-virus medication since he went to his GP with symptoms after returning from Mexico recently, remains quarantined in his home in the east of the country.

Dr Tony Holohan, of the Department of Health and Children, said the case was originally reported on April 30. He said: "All appropriate clinical and public health actions have been taken. The individual is recovering well."

Second case of swine flu confirmed

Monday, 25 May 2009

A second Irish case of swine flu has been confirmed.

The Department of Health's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan said the emergence of this latest case did not come as a surprise.

The H1N1 virus was found in a woman living in the east of the country, who had recently arrived home from New York.

Officials said the woman - described as 'clinically well' - was being kept at home and receiving treatment.
