A second Illinois resident has died after contracting H1N1 influenza, bringing the U.S. death toll from the virus to 15.

Dr. Damon, T. Arnold, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said the person who died was a suburban Cook County resident. The patient had other significant medical conditions that increased vulnerability to the H1N1 virus. Close contacts to this person, including health care providers, have received appropriate medical attention.

Re: Second Illinois Death

I Think the 2 new deaths in NYC and this one in IL show a a shift from died form chronic medical conditions XYZ to had significant other medical conditions and by the way we are not going to say what they are or how the contributed. Staring to follow the pattern seen in other sectors when people start to question whether they are being told the truth leading to "it is because we say it is...NOW SHUT-UP!!!!"

The patient had other significant medical conditions that increased vulnerability to the H1N1 virus.

No other details about the case will be released, Arnold said.

Second Illinoisan dies of swine flu

<!-- -->Associated Press - May 27, 2009 1:54 PM ET
CHICAGO (AP) - The state's public health director says the death of a second Illinoisan from swine flu underscores the need for people with other medical problems to take precautions.
Dr. Damon Arnold says the latest Illinois victim was a suburban Cook County resident with underlying medical problems. He says no other information will be released.
Health officials say the first Illinois resident to die of swine flu was a 22-year-old Chicago man who was hospitalized for about two weeks before he died Sunday. He also had other medical conditions.
But Arnold says everyone should take precautions. That includes covering coughs and sneezes, frequently washing hands and staying home if you're sick.

<!-- Article's First Paragraph --><!-- BlogBurst ContentStart -->A northwest suburban resident has died after contracting the H1N1 flu, the second Illinois resident to die from complications related to the disease, state health officials said Wednesday.
The victim had other significant medical conditions which increased their vulnerability to the H1N1 virus, according to a statement issued by State Public Health Director Dr. Damon Arnold.
The person died "within the last couple of days" from complications of the virus and other underlying health conditions, said Kelly Jakubek, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Those who were in close contact with the person have been treated. "It's not a larger risk to the public," she said.
The Cook County Department of Public Health said the person lived in northwest Cook County, but was not releasing further details.
The first Illinois resident to die was a 22-year-old Chicago man, state health officials said Tuesday. The Chicago Department of Public Health would not identify the man, but said he had been hospitalized since May 12, a day after showing symptoms. He died Sunday.
Health officials said the man had underlying medical problems, but declined to elaborate.
Illinois now has 975 confirmed cases of the virus. Of those, 430 are in Chicago and 288 are in suburban Cook County. There are 61 cases in DuPage County, 57 in Lake, 57 in Will, 30 in Kane, four in McHenry and two in Kendall.
Nationally, there are more than 7,900 confirmed cases of the virus and at least 13 people have died, though the official CDC count remains at 11 deaths and will not include the Illinois cases until it is updated next week, an IDPH spokeswoman said.
"We are saddened by the deaths but, as has been noted in Illinois and around the country, fatalities due to H1N1 continue to occur, especially when there are underlying medical conditions that increase the risk of severe illness,? Arnold said.

Re: Second Illinois Death

It may be true that everyone who has died from A(novel H1N1) in the US had underlying medical problems but frankly without more detail regarding this factor I am becoming a little more than skeptical.

A former mayor of Boys Town has died, apparently of the H1N1 virus in Chicago.

A paid obituary in the Lincoln Journal Star says 20-year-old Caitlin Anne Treat Huber died of the H1N1 virus a day after giving birth to her second daughter.

Illinois officials would say only that a woman from suburban Cook County who had other medical problems died May 27.

Boys Town's national executive director, the Rev. Steven Boes, said Tuesday that Huber had been a leader there until she graduated in May 2007. Not only was she mayor of the home for troubled youths, she also was commander of the Army Junior ROTC.

Boes says Huber will be missed. Boys Town is going to hold a private service on Wednesday.

A family service is set for Sunday in Lincoln.
