21 Confirmed Cases of H1N1 in County

PITTSBURG ? .New figures from the state show that H1N1 has hit the state particularly hard.
A weekly report from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment shows that influenza-like illnesses have jumped from under 10 percent of emergency departments to roughly 36 percent for the southeast region of the state (consisting of 12 counties).
Janis Goedeke, Crawford County Health officer, released figures showing that Crawford County has 21 confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu, including three confirmed in the last week and one confirmed on Tuesday. One test is still pending at this time.
The majority of those confirmed cases, 15, have been in those under the age of 25. Ten cases were in the 10-24 age group and five were in the 2-9 year old age group. Four H1N1 results were in the 25-49 age group, with two cases above 50 years old.
The weekly state report shows that regional clinics show about 5 percent of patients reporting influenza-like illnesses in the last week.
In fact, Crawford County has sent the fourth-most number of samples to be tested for H1N1 flu at KDHE laboratories, with 136 specimens sent to the state. That is fourth behind only Riley County (199 specimens), Johnson County (175 specimens) and Sedgwick County (146 specimens).
Across the state, three additional counties (Kingman, Comanche and Rice counties) were identified as having confirmed cases of H1N1 flu, bringing the total to 60 counties in the state with confirmed cases of the flu strain.
?We saw seasonal flu off and on all summer,? said Krista Postai, Community Health Center for Southeast Kansas executive director. ?We didn?t test much this summer. Everything we sent back over the summer was probably H1N1. We have not seen the seasonal flu really hit yet.?
