The weekly situation report contains summary epidemiological information on influenza-like illness and Influenza A H1N1v activity in Scotland.

There is evidence that Influenza A H1N1v continues to circulate in Scotland with the overall levels of illness which may be due to the virus similar in week 47 compared to the previous week (Week 46).

The daily average GP consultation rate for Scotland was 119.9 per 100,000 with a 95% CI 117.0, 122.8, this represents a non-significant (1%) increase from the previous week (119.4 per 100,000)

Between weeks 46 and 47, the rates in NHS Highland and NHS Lothian increased while those in NHS Borders and NHS Lanarkshire decreased. There was no significant change in any other NHS board. There was no significant change in any other NHS board

Between weeks 46 and 47, the proportion of cold/flu calls to NHS 24 across most of Scotland increased from 5.6% to 7.8% and remains above the levels expected for this time of year

The age groups 5-14 and 15-64 continue to account for the highest proportions of cold/flu calls

The number of deaths from all causes reported during the week is consistent with the levels expected from historical figures and will continue to be monitored closely. The total number of reports received of deaths among confirmed Influenza A H1N1v cases in Scotland, as at 25 November, is 42.

The H1N1v swab positivity rate (44.4%) in week 47, among those consulting their GPs through the sentinel scheme, is similar to last week

A further 137 people, confirmed as having Influenza A H1N1v infection, required hospital admission during week 47. The total number of laboratory confirmed H1N1v hospitalised cases is 1104.

There is limited evidence of antiviral resistance in Scotland: five of the 22 oseltamivir resistant viruses in the UK have been identified in Scotland

Since the beginning of the flu season, 64.4% and 40% of individuals aged 65 years and over and at risk individuals under 65 years of age, respectively, have been immunised against seasonal influenza. These figures are similar to that seen at the same point last year (67.4% and 39.6%, respectively).

The pandemic vaccine uptake data in health and social care staff is presented: to date, the estimated uptake rate for one dose of the vaccine among front line health and social care staff is 37.9% and 18%, respectively.

Antiviral prescribing patterns are consistent with the stable trends observed in General Practice consultation rates
