There is evidence that Influenza A H1N1v continues to circulate in Scotland with the overall levels of illness which may be due to the virus similar in week 46 compared to the previous week (Week 45).
The daily average GP consultation rate for Scotland was 119.4 per 100,000 (95% CI 111.3, 117.1), this represents a small (4%) increase from the previous week (114.2 per 100,000)
During week 46, the rates in NHS Dumfries and Galloway, NHS Fife, NHS Grampian, NHS Highland and NHS Tayside are higher; the rate in NHS Lanarkshire shows some evidence of decreasing. There was no significant change in any other NHS board
Between weeks 45 and 46, the proportion of cold/flu calls to NHS 24 across most of Scotland increased from 4.9% to 5.6% and remains above the levels expected for this time of year
The age groups 5-14 and 15-64 continue to account for the highest proportions of cold/flu calls
During last week higher than normal absence rates due to influenza-like illness have been reported in an increasing number of schools across Scotland
The number of deaths from all causes reported during the week is consistent with the levels expected from historical figures and will continue to be monitored closely (Figure 7). The total number of deaths among confirmed Influenza A H1N1v cases in Scotland, as at 18 November, is 38.
The estimated number of new Influenza A H1N1v cases this week who consulted their GP was 7400 (95% CI 6650, 8200). Since not all people consult their GP, the estimate of the total number of people in Scotland who have contracted H1N1v over the last week is 21200 (95% CI 16600, 30550) ? a 1.3% decrease compared to the previous week (21500)
A further 126 people, confirmed as having Influenza A H1N1v infection, required hospital admission during week 46. The total number of laboratory confirmed H1N1v hospitalised cases is 967.
There is limited evidence of antiviral resistance in Scotland: three of the 12 oseltamivir resistant viruses in the UK have been identified in Scotland.
