Four die from flu but levels of virus still low

FOUR people have died from flu in Scotland this winter but the number of people catching the virus remains low, according to officials.

The latest update released by Health Protection Scotland (HPS), which monitors flu levels each winter, says that 14 patients have been admitted to intensive care units with the illness since the start of October.

Tests have confirmed that all but one was suffering from swine flu, the H1N1 virus which caused the flu pandemic in 2009-10 and now returns each year...

Thank you for posting this, I haven't heard anything about flu here this winter and didn't know.

• Since week 40 2013, a total of fourteen influenza infections requiring ICU have been reported

No investigation following swine flu death on Skye

NHS Highland have said there will be no investigation after a Skye man died from the swine flu virus last week.

Dunvegan campsite owner Colin Campbell died last Monday (3rd February) having contracted the H1N1 virus. He had initially been hospitalised in Portree, but as his condition deteriorated he was transferred firstly to hospital in Broadford and then to Glasgow?s Victoria Infirmary where he died.

Ken Oates, consultant in public health for NHS Highland, said: ?We can confirm that there has been a death but will be issuing no further information on this case.

?Across the whole of Scotland there has been a very low incidence of flu cases in Scotland this winter.
