Man suffering from swine flu dies

A middle-aged man with no other apparent health problems has become the eighth person to die in Scotland after contracting swine flu, officials said.

The 53-year-old, from Fife, is thought to be the first H1N1 victim with no underlying health problems to die in Scotland.

The Scottish Government said: "A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal at Dunfermline.

Eighth Scot dies from swine flu


Rates of swine flu in Scotland have remained relatively low

A 53-year-old man from Fife has become the first person to die from swine flu in Scotland without having an underlying medical condition.

He was the eighth person to die north of the border after contracting the H1N1 strain of the virus.

His family have requested no further details are released about the case.
Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Our thoughts are with the patient's family and friends at this very sad time."

She added: "Fortunately in the vast majority of H1N1 cases, most people have fairly mild symptoms and make a full recovery within a week.

"But it's important that you get the help you need as quickly as possible if you are at greater risk.

"The latest figures for Scotland also show that while the virus continues to circulate, the rates remain relatively low."
