The patient is understood to have recently returned from west Africa and began suffering from a fever.

The patient, believed to be from Fife, was taken by secure ambulance to the infectious diseases unit of the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

A Scottish Government spokesman said: ?We are aware that, as a precautionary measure, NHS Lothian has admitted a patient who has returned from West Africa.

Suspected Ebola case tested at Scots hospital

A HEALTH worker recently returned to Scotland from West Africa has been tested for Ebola at an Edinburgh Hospital.

The patient, from Fife, contacted the NHS after complaining of a fever after returning home.

The man was taken by secure ambulance to the infectious diseases unit at the Western General Hospital on Thursday.

Confirmation of whether the man has contracted Ebola is expected today.

The patient followed the correct protocol given to those returning from West Africa by contacting the hospital after feeling unwell.

It is unclear how long ago the man returned, which would determine whether the incubation period for the virus has passed.

Edinburgh patient tests 'negative' for Ebola

A man admitted to an Edinburgh hospital after returning from west Africa has tested negative for Ebola.

NHS Lothian said the patient was screened at the Western General on Thursday after reporting a fever.

Earlier the health board said the test was being done as a precautionary measure and that the patient was being kept in isolation.

The Scottish government said a blood sample taken from the man was "found to be negative for Ebola".

It had initially been reported by a news agency that the patient was female.

A patient at the Edinburgh Western General has tested negative for Ebola virus.

The individual was transferred by the Scottish Ambulance Service to hospital on Thursday afternoon. As the individual had recently returned from one of the West African countries affected by the Ebola outbreak and felt unwell, they were tested for Ebola and other infections as a precaution. A blood sample was taken and tested at the viral haemorrhagic fever testing facility in Edinburgh and found to be negative for Ebola.

Scotland has a robust health protection surveillance system which monitors global disease outbreaks and ensures that we are fully prepared to respond to such situations.
