Scientists Gather In Iowa For Bird-Flu Training

AMES, Iowa -- Scientists from nearly two dozen countries are at Iowa State University Monday to learn how to diagnose the fatal bird flu and control its spread.The 26 scientists are taking part in a USDA course at the College of Veterinary Medicine.Ames is key for avian influenza training and testing, and is home to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories. The lab serves as the final confirmatory laboratory that will determine whether the virus has arrived in the United States.Bird flu has killed at least 128 people worldwide since it started ravaging Asian poultry farms in late 2003.
