Researchers of animal biotechnology at the University of Guadalajara (UdeG) initiated a study to identify variants of human influenza viruses from pigs on farms in Jalisco.
The expert from the University Center for Biological and Agricultural Sciences (CUCBA) of the University of Guadalajara, David Sanchez Cyprus, said it would also examine the role of pigs in the recombination of the virus.
'The virus of this type have the possibility to reuse their genetic material to generate new varieties, determine what type of virus are present in the pigs and the possibility, if any, of the presence of human influenza in them' he said.
He clarified that this does not mean that the pig is the carrier or transmission. The human influenza virus has a combination of several types of genetic material: avian influenza, swine and human, 'but this does not mean that pork is generated and transmitted. "
The project, entitled 'Analysis of the role of pork as a reservoir of human influenza virus in Jalisco AH1N1', will receive funding from the State Council for Science and Technology of Jalisco (COECYTJAL). The total amounts to two million pesos.
This work began in February with the operational part, ie with the purchase of equipment, called real-time PCR, which is the main tool for molecular diagnostics.
Later there will be a random from Jalisco farms.
We must remember that Jalisco is the largest producer of pork in Mexico, representing 22 percent of domestic production.
