Schmallenberg virus: Validation of an ELISA kit
An ELISA kit for serological diagnosis SBV has been approved by the Animal Health Laboratory of Anses Maisons-Alfort.
Serological tests are essential for epidemiological surveillance and conduct epidemiological surveys. The antibodies can be detected by serum neutralization or immunofluorescence but these techniques are slow to implement, difficult to perform on a large number of samples and do not allow a standardized interpretation of results.
Therefore, knowledge about the prevalence of infection in outbreaks of SBV were limited so far ... and those in the infected herds unrecognized non-existent. During the week of April 2, 2012, the Animal Health Laboratory Maisons-Alfort, after a collaborative study, validated indirect ELISA, developed and produced by IDvet ?, based on a recombinant protein of SBV.
This kit is being validated by any other national reference laboratories in Europe.
External validation studies of this test indicate excellent specificity (99.75% - 95% CI [99.26 to 99.92%], n = 1179), and a very good sensitivity (96.47% - [95% CI: 93.43% - 98.13%], n = 255). This will now allow to consider specifically the implementation of large-scale epidemiological studies to estimate the magnitude and extension of infection in flocks of ruminants.
