"No infectious TB cases reported at Myrtle Beach homeless shelter; testing continues
State health officials say no one has tested positive for infectious tuberculosis following a health threat disclosed last week at the Street Reach homeless shelter here, although more testing is scheduled for Wednesday.
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control reported Tuesday that it conducted 183 blood tests of shelter clients, workers and volunteers last week. Of that number, eight people tested positive for the TB germ but none of those have developed the disease.
...DHEC continues to read X-rays and will conduct more testing from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday for individuals who think they might have been exposed to the TB germ, according to Kathy Jenkins, executive director of shelter operator New Directions of Horry County Inc. Beasley said the agency also continues to investigate whether other groups should be tested.
A former Street Reach client tested positive for infectious TB earlier this month, according to DHEC officials. The infectious patient, who cannot be identified because of federal privacy laws, stayed at Street Reach between April 26 and May 17 and was admitted to a local hospital on May 27. The hospital did not diagnose the disease until after it had already discharged the patient on June 4 and given the patient a one-way bus ticket to Georgia. Beasley would not identify the hospital.
Nancy Nydam, media relations specialist with the Georgia Department of Public Health, told The Sun News last week that the patient ?is in Georgia and is undergoing TB treatment.?"
