Many absences prompt LMA to close until Monday

MANNING -- Administrators at Laurence Manning Academy announced today the school would be closed through Monday, citing several cases of influenza and other illnesses.

Headmaster Spencer Jordan said about 280 students did not report to school this morning due to flu, strep throat or other upper respiratory illnesses.

"We have 1,000 students, so you're looking at 20 to 28 percent of the student body," Jordan said. "I know DHEC (the Department of Health and Environmental Control) and the CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) are not requiring schools to close, but to be proactive, our board and our administrative staff have decided it's in the best interest of our students to do so."

Jordan added that athletic and extra-curricular activities are also cancelled, noting a varsity football game scheduled for Friday will be held at 7 p.m. Monday.

"We will be open during our regular hours Monday," he said. "I'm sure we'll still have some flu-like symptoms to deal with among our student body then, but hopefully, the majority of this will be gone and maybe we will have seen the worst of it."

School officials at Laurence Manning Academy say they have decided to close school for three days because of swine flu fears. School will be closed on Sept. 23, 24, and 25 while the Friday night varsity football game will be rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 28. Headmaster Jordan says the measures were put into place after 287 students at the school called in sick on Tuesday after coming down with flu-like symptoms.

S.C. private school closes over flu concerns

The Associated Press

MANNING, S.C. -- A private school in South Carolina worried about a flu epidemic has closed after hundreds of students called in sick.

Laurence Manning Academy headmaster Spencer Jordan says in a message on the school's Web site that the private school is closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Multiple media outlets reported the school made the decision after about 290 of its 1,000 students called in sick on Tuesday, citing flu-like symptoms.

Jordan says a third of those students have been diagnosed with Type A Influenza. The rest have various cold symptoms.

He says the school has no confirmed cases of swine flu. Officials say maintenance crews are wiping down all the surfaces, desks and door knobs.

Classes are to resume Monday.

Hospital officials say Pipkin died of pneumonia from flu-like symptoms she had been suffering from. Pipkin's family adds Ashley had already visited Tuomey Medical Center in Sumter twice for the same issues.

WHO. Measures in school settings (Pandemic Briefing Note 10, edited)

Excerpt:

"The timing of school closure is critically important. Modelling studies suggest that school closure has its greatest benefits when schools are closed very early in an outbreak, ideally before 1% of the population falls ill. Under ideal conditions, school closure can reduce the demand for health care by an estimated 30?50% at the peak of the pandemic. However, if schools close too late in the course of a community-wide outbreak, the resulting reduction in transmission is likely to be very limited."
