Veterinarians: Underpaid and unappreciated

WITH the spread of numerous zoonotic diseases such as Rift Valley Fever, Swine Flu and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), veterinarians in Saudi Arabia have played a vital role in combatting these diseases.

However, when it comes to work conditions, salaries and general employment outlook, veterinarians are yet to be given the same treatment afforded to doctors and other medical personnel.

With veterinarians acting as the first line of defense in protecting humans against zoonotic diseases and viruses, often by placing their own lives at risk, better treatment, including monetary compensation and mandatory medical insurance, is a must to guarantee their well-being and retention of their services, Al-Riyadh daily reported...
