This might be interesting. If the method of spread really is thorugh infected dialysis equipment and not H2H via respiratory droplets, that would explain why no HCW have been affected, and might also explain the rather large cluster.

If all (or all but one?) of the patients were on dialysis before contracting NCoV, that might explain the high mortality rate in this cluster, as the virus can cause kidney failure in healthy individuals.

From Reuters this morning a story that indicates World Health Organization officials will soon visit the hospital where an outbreak of nCoV(aka ****) has infected at least 13 people.

In a statement byGregory Hartl, spokesperson for WHO, we learn that one of the areas they will focus on is the hemodialysis unit (see earlier blog Media Reports Blame Saudi nCoV Outbreak On Dialysis Equipment) as playing a potential role in the spread of the virus.


Hartl cautioned, "However, the presence of infection in two family members not associated with the facility itself raises a concern about potential broader transmission in the community.?

Quoting informed medical and health sources, Al-Watan newspaper said an investigation committee formed to determine the causes of the coronavirus noted that a number of workers in the hospital did not observe the international rules necessary for combating epidemics.

The Ministry of Health on Sunday said it was in close contact with the World Health Organization (WHO) to find out more about the new type of the coronavirus.

The spread of the virus caused panic among the residents and led to a state of alert in the region?s health affairs departments.

A relative of one victim who died of the virus said the patient was not suffering from any serious illness when he was admitted to the private hospital for dialysis three times a week.

?A few days after he was admitted to the hospital for dialysis, the doctors told us that his health condition was deteriorating. Two days later our relative died,? he said.

The sources said another patient who got the virus was improving and was admitted to another hospital from which he would not be discharged before two weeks.

They said the other five patients who contracted the virus were currently receiving intensive treatment but their condition was not stable.

The head of the applied medical sciences at the community college in Najran Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Qurashi said the coronavirus was one of the fast spreading viruses and described it as very serious according to international standards.

He said it was very difficult to analyze the virus because it soon turns into crystal balls that look like pieces of salt or sugar.

KSA: Coronavirus spreads fear among workers


The deadly coronavirus is spreading through contaminated kidney dialysis machines and because health workers are not following international infection control procedures, medical sources in the Al-Ahsa health department told a local newspaper.
The virus has killed seven people in Al-Ahsa, with a further six people reportedly infected over the last two weeks. The situation has caused panic among health workers, visitors and patients in the region.
The relative of a recent victim said that the man had no serious illness but had undergone dialysis three times a week at a local hospital. ?We were very surprised when doctors at the hospital told my relative?s family that their father had a virus infection that caused his death,? the man said.
One infected patient is under observation at a local hospital and would only be discharged after a full recovery, sources at the hospital said. Five others are in an unstable condition at Al-Ahsa and Asharqiah hospitals. All medical staff and visitors at King Fahd Hospital in Hofuf have been wearing face masks. There has been a drop in the number of visitors to the hospital.
Undersecretary at the Ministry of Health Mansour bin Nasser Al-Hawasi visited a number of hospitals in Al-Ahsa to ensure procedures are being followed to fight the virus. He ordered hospital staff to take a number of preventive measures. He visited patients to check on their health, was briefed on the medical arrangements in the region and met Al-Ahsa Gov. Prince Bader bin Muhammad bin Jalawi Al-Saud.
