13 nurses put under swine flu observation

RIYADH ? King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center has put 13 nurses, who came into direct contact with the nurse who was found to be suffering from swine flu, on a precautionary therapeutic program.
Seven nurses have been given one week rest which is the incubation period of the viral disease, said a report.
Dr Kefah Hafez, Director of the Hospital?s Administration, said tests were conducted on 117 staff members who came in contact with the affected nurse. But the results were negative.
He said the nurse?s condition was stable. The hospital would repeat the tests to make sure that she has recovered from the flu.
Dr Kefah said six of the passengers of the Gulf Flight 163 had approached the hospitals and underwent test, which proved they were negative.
The Ministry of Health announced Wednesday that it had detected the Kingdom?s first case of swine flu, found in a Filipina nurse working at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh.
The nurse had been on vacation in the Philippines and returned on Friday.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) - An official from the Saudi Health Ministry has announced the country's second case of swine flu.
Khaled al-Merghalani told the Associated Press Sunday that a Saudi student studying in the U.S. tested positive for the disease after landing in the western seaport of Jiddah, on a flight from Washington.
He is the first Saudi national to contract the disease.

Saudi Arabia reported its first swine flu case on Wednesday in a Filipino nurse who had returned to the kingdom from vacation in her country. The nurse has been quarantined and is receiving medical attention.
Though rare in the Middle East, there are have been isolated cases of the flu in Kuwait, Egypt and the Emirates, generally from travelers.

Saudi Arabia said on Thursday a toddler has tested positive for swine flu, the third such reported case in the kingdom, hours after the World Health Organization declared a pandemic.

The three-and-a-half-year-old boy, along with his family, arrived in Saudi from the United States last Sunday, the official SPA news agency quoted Saudi Health Minister Abdullah al-Rabia as saying.

The toddler was checked into the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh on Wednesday when he began showing symptoms of the A(H1N1) virus. Medical tests showed he had been infected with the virus, Rabia said.

"The boy is currently undergoing medical procedures that are taken in such cases," he said, pointing out that members of his family were examined and tested negative for the virus.

A Saudi student who returned from the United States to the kingdom was confirmed as the country's second case of infection by the H1N1 virus on Sunday, just few days after the Gulf kingdom reported its first case of swine flu, a Filipina nurse who tested positive several days after returning from holiday to Saudi Arabia via Bahrain.

Saudi Arabia's neighbor Kuwait said on May 24 that 18 U.S. soldiers had H1N1 flu in the first cases to hit the world's largest oil exporting region. Kuwait has a logistics base for the U.S. army for their Iraq operations.

The flu first arrived in the Middle East via Israel after a man arrived from Mexico, the epicenter of the outbreak, where he had contracted the virus in April.

Saudi reports three new swine flu cases

RIYADH (AFP) ? Saudi Arabia said on Friday that three family members of a small boy who tested positive for swine flu also have the virus, bringing to six the number of reported swine flu cases in the kingdom.

The father and two sisters of the three-and-a-half-year-old Saudi boy were diagnosed with A(H1N1) influenza after undergoing tests on Thursday and Friday, the health ministry said in a statement carried by official SPA news agency.

The family arrived in Saudi Arabia from the United States last Sunday, according to Health Minister Abdullah al-Rabia. The boy tested positive on Thursday.

A Saudi student diagnosed with swine flu was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after treatment, while a Filipina nurse returning from holidays also tested positive for the flu last week.

The World Health Organisation on Thursday declared a pandemic after its latest figures showed the number of reported A(H1N1) infections has reached 29,000 in 74 countries, including 141 deaths.

It cited the health ministry as saying they were a Filipino nurse working in a Riyadh hospital and two children, including the eight-month-old daughter of a Mauritanian diagnosed with the A(H1N1) virus on Sunday after arriving from Canada.

Abdullah Hugail of the National Committee of Infectious Diseases said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia was vulnerable to the spread of swine flu because of the high number of foreign workers and pilgrims in the kingdom, media reports said.

Some seven million out of the 25.4-million-strong Saudi population are foreign workers.

Jubail swine flu case takes total to 30

JEDDAH ? The Ministry of Health announced Friday a new case of swine flu found in a Filipina nurse working in Jubail in the Eastern Province, bringing the total number of registered cases in the Kingdom to 30.
A ministry statement said that the 32-year-old nurse had been placed in isolation and that all regulations for preventing and treating the virus were being followed, and reiterated its previous advice on measures that may be taken to safeguard against the virus.

Lebanese woman hospitalized in Riyadh with H1N1 infection

RIYADH: A 25-year-old Lebanese woman has been diagnosed with swine flu and admitted to the Armed Forces Hospital in Riyadh, bringing the total number of people affected by the disease in the Kingdom to 35, it was announced yesterday.

According to a senior Health Ministry official, the woman caught the disease from another infected person. He said some of the identified cases include people who brought the disease from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Besides following the routine health advice offered by the ministry, the official said, people should try to keep away from H1N1 sufferers. ?Some of those who have contracted the disease were those who visited and moved closely with patients,? he said.

Meanwhile, extensive arrangements are being made by the ministry to hold a four-day workshop on how to prevent an H1N1 outbreak. The workshop is scheduled to begin on Saturday.

Al-Mirghalani said the Kingdom, which hosts a big expatriate population, has the additional responsibility to look after hundreds of thousands of foreign Haj and Umrah pilgrims as well as business visitors.

Following the workshop, experts will be taken to the Haj Terminal of King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and other places with huge concentration of pilgrims to get their ideas and suggestions in overcoming the current health crisis.

Riyadh -- The Ministry of Health assured the citizens and residents that all cases of swine flu virus H1N1 type-A are in good health, and that most of the cases completed the treatment.

"As many as 77 cases have been fully cured and returned back to their normal lives, while the rest of the new cases are still subject to the isolation and medical procedures until the completion of their stable condition," said the Ministry announcement.

However, the Ministry announced today the detection of 8 new cases, comprising a 24-year-old young man, a 2 and half years old toddler, a 2-year old Nigerian girl, an Eight months infant, a 30- year-old Nigerian woman, a 23-year-old Saudi woman, a 49-year-old Saudi citizen and a Saudi girl of 4 years-old.

With the addition of the news cases, the number of swine flu infected cases totaled 89 as confirmed by MOH laboratories. All the new 8 cases have been detected in Riyadh Region. These were the results of their contact s with the already infected cases of the swine flu.

The isolation process is applied according to the national action plan for the prevention of swine flu and as recommended by the World Health Organization.

Muscat - Oman on Monday banned the elderly, people who are ill and children from travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform the lesser pilgrimage, umrah, in fear of contracting swine flu.

The ministry of religious affairs issued a statement saying that the ban on performing the umrah is to "protect people and the society".

The ministry did not clarify whether the ban will be extended to cover the main annual pilgrimage, or hajj, to the Muslim holy sites in Western Saudi Arabia, which falls this year in November.

In neighbouring Bahrain, hajj authorities also urged old and sick people, as well as pregnant women and children to skip the hajj this year, according to Al-Ayyam newspaper on Monday.

Saudi Arabia last week warned elderly Muslims and pregnant women against undertaking the hajj this year as the threat of swine flu mounts worldwide.

It said it was hopeful that a swine flu vaccine could be readied ahead of the hajj, when more than 1.7 million pilgrims from all over the world descend on the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The number of A(H1N1) cases in the kingdom has reached 125, according to official count.

Ministry of Health assured the citizens and residents that all cases of swine flu in good health, thanks to God Almighty and most of the cases completed the treatment, saying recovery (134) of pigs infected with avian influenza type A-H1N1 and returned to their normal lives, while the rest of the new cases, the condition health is stable and will be announced soon, God willing, their terms are still subject to the generally accepted medical procedures.

In the same context, the Ministry of Health announced that a follow-up is continuing to update the status of the disease during the swine flu (24) hours have been recorded (11) new cases of disease, swine influenza type A-H1N1.
The Ministry pointed out that the number of injuries as follows .. (3) cases of citizens (males) and number (8) cases of residents (3 males and 5 females), bringing the total number (160) the case of pigs infected with avian influenza A-H1N1 was confirmed in all laboratories of the Ministry of Health .
