Overcrowded Saskatoon hospitals have patients in hallways

Saskatoon hospitals are so stuffed, some patients are being cared for in hallways, the Saskatoon Health Region says.

The health region, in a Thursday news release, said high demand, a growing population, outbreaks of norovirus and a backlog of patients waiting for long-term care beds have all contributed to crowded conditions at Royal University Hospital and St. Paul?s Hospital...

Units closed at St. Paul's Hospital after norovirus outbreak

Two units in St. Paul?s Hospital are closed to patients, new admissions and transfers after a norovirus outbreak.

According to the Saskatoon Health Region, six patients on each of the two units were diagnosed with the gastrointestinal illness. The cases were first identified on the weekend. In addition, two employees have reported norovirus-like symptoms.

Saskatoon hospital closed to visitors after norovirus outbreak

On Thursday afternoon, St. Paul?s Hospital in Saskatoon closed its doors to visitors for the second time in 12 months as staff say the hospital has 28 confirmed cases of norovirus.

Jean Morrison, CEO and president of St. Paul?s Hospital said staff is working to contain the virus, but the fact the hospital is currently over capacity is making containment a challenge.

?We are going to close the hospital to visitors so that we can, as quickly as possible, contain the outbreak,? said Morrison. ?We?ve been running at capacity and continue to run at and over capacity, so we have a very full and busy hospital and we really need to decrease the amount of movement we have going throughout the building.?

St. Paul's reopens after norovirus outbreak

St. Paul's Hospital will reopen to visitors Wednesday morning.

The hospital has been closed to visitors since March 14 to reduce the spread of the gastrointestinal illness norovirus.

The norovirus outbreak affected up to 35 patients and staff, according to a news release from the Saskatoon Health Region.

Another potential case of Norovirus

After a tough winter dealing with norovirus outbreaks, the Saskatoon Health region maybe be dealing with another case.

Last weekend, a gastrointestinal disease spread through a provincial dance competition at TCU Place. Up to 1,000 people from across Saskatchewan at the competition, and it?s believed as many as 500 could be sick with the virus.

Many of those dancers are competing at another event in Prince Albert, and there?s concern the virus could spread.

Alert: Outbreak Declared at Swift Current Care Centre

Updated: May 15, 2013

Under the direction of Dr. David Torr, Consulting Medical Health Officer, the Swift Current Care Centre has been placed under outbreak status due to confirmed cases of norovirus. There are presently 6 residents of the facility showing signs and symptoms of norovirus.

Visitation is being restricted at this facilty as a result of this outbreak. The only exceptions to these restrictions will be in the event of an ?end of life? situation, where the nurse in charge at the facility can be contacted to discuss the options that are available for the family members to visit their loved one.
