Sask. reported 19 COVID-19 deaths for the week of May 1-7, up five from the last update. Of those, seven were in Regina and five were in Saskatoon.

A total of 321 people are in hospital related to COVID-19 as of May 11, down 69 from last week. Of that, 125 are for a COVID-19 related illness, 186 are an incidental COVID-19 infection and 10 are under investigation. There are sixteen people in ICUs.

A total of 710 lab confirmed cases were also reported, which is down 55 from the last update.

There were 252 new lineage results reported. Of those 252, all were Omicron with the BA.2 sublineage accounting for 94.8 per cent...

There were 22 more COVID-19 related deaths for the week of May 8-14 along with 465 new laboratory confirmed cases, according to the latest update from the Saskatchewan government.

The province also said that Paxlovid will now be available in 170 pharmacies across the province as well as through select physicians and nurse practitioners.

The drug is only available if prescribed and is an anti-viral treatment for COVID-19...

... “There were 265 new lineage results reported this week. Of the 265 variants of concern (VOC) identified by whole genome sequencing, 100 per cent were Omicron,” according to the province.

The Omicron BA.2 sublineage accounted for 71 per cent of the VOCs reported.

There are 270 people in hospitals across the province with COVID-19, as of May 18.

Ninty-seven are for a COVID-19 related illness, 164 have an incidental COVID-19 infection and nine are under investigation.

Of the 270, 14 people are in intensive care units...

A total of 258 people are in hospital related to COVID-19 as of May 25, down 12 from last week. Of that, 90 are for a COVID-19 related illness, 150 are an incidental COVID-19 infection and 18 are under investigation. There are 10 people in ICUs.

A total of 376 lab confirmed cases were also reported, which is down 89 from the last update.

There were 344 new lineage results reported. Of those 344, all were Omicron with the BA.2 sublineage accounting for 87.8 per cent...

Summary for the week of May 22-28, 2022
  • 5,667 laboratory tests were performed in Saskatchewan reflecting 4.7 tests performed per 1,000 population. The number of tests was lower than the number of tests in the previous week (6,402).
  • One in nineteen laboratory tests were positive (weekly test positivity of 5.3 per cent), which is a decrease from the previous week (5.5 per cent).
  • 364 new cases were confirmed reflecting 0.3 laboratory-confirmed cases per 1,000 population, lower than the number of new cases in the previous week (376).
  • The majority of laboratory-confirmed cases this week were 50 years and older (52.5 per cent).
  • There were 437 new lineage results reported this week. Of the 437 variants of concern identified by whole genome sequencing, 100 per cent were Omicron.
  • The Omicron BA.2 sublineage accounted for 76.9 per cent of the variants of concern reported this week, which was lower compared to the previous week. A total of 187 people are in hospital related to COVID-19 as of June 8, down 45 from last week. Of that, 56 are for a COVID-19 related illness, 118 are an incidental COVID-19 infection and 13 are under investigation. There are 10 people in ICUs.

A total of 285 lab confirmed cases were also reported, which is down 79 from the last update.

A total of 165 people are in hospital related to COVID-19 as of June 15, down 22 from last week. Of that, 51 are for a COVID-19 related illness, 106 are an incidental COVID-19 infection and 8 are under investigation. There are 6 people in ICUs.

A total of 394 lab confirmed cases were also reported, which is up 109 from the last update.

Shifting to a Monthly COVID-19 Reporting Schedule
In recent weeks, COVID-19 surveillance indicators suggest a decreasing trend in COVID-19 infections. As we move into the summer months, the Ministry of Health will be transitioning to monthly COVID-19 situation reports. There will be a weekly report released on June 30, and then the transition will begin. On July 21, a 3-week report will be released (reporting period of June 26 to July 16). The first monthly report will be released on August 18 (with a reporting period of July 17 to August 13). There will no longer be a news release announcing the release of the report. The epidemiological report will continue to be released at 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays monthly and will be posted on the Government of Saskatchewan website.
The Ministry and health sector partners will continue to monitor COVID-19 surveillance data and the frequency of reporting may be adjusted in the future based on observed trends.
"Saskatchewan residents should continue to do their own personal risk assessment over the summer," Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said. "They should continue considering using a mask and improving ventilation if hosting a crowded indoor event; or better still, spend time outdoors during our great Saskatchewan summer. We will continue to ensure that people have access to information on a monthly basis, through detailed public health analysis, and more frequent reporting if concerning trends emerge. Meanwhile, please consider remaining up to date on your COVID vaccine, including any booster doses you are eligible for; which includes a booster dose for everyone 12 and older four months after their 2nd dose. And a 2nd booster for anyone 50 and older four months after their 1st booster; and even getting your 1st or 2nd dose if still unvaccinated."
Weekly COVID-19 EPI Report
Issued Thursdays, the Ministry of Health's COVID-19 integrated epidemiology (epi) report utilizes multiple data sources and includes laboratory-confirmed cases, deaths, tests, vaccination information provincially and by zones, as well as hospital and ICU census trends and distribution of rapid antigen tests. The epi report this week looks at data from Sunday, June 12, to Saturday, June 18, 2022. The hospitalization data is a comparison from June 15, to June 22, 2022.

Summary for the week of June 12 - 18, 2022
  • 5,635 laboratory tests were performed in Saskatchewan reflecting 4.7 tests performed per 1,000 population. The number of tests was lower than the number of tests in the previous week (5,880).
  • The weekly test positivity of 4.0 per cent is lower than the previous week (6.5 per cent); the highest test positivity this week was in the South East zone (9.1 per cent).
  • 231 new cases were confirmed reflecting 19 laboratory-confirmed cases per 100,000 population, lower than the number of new cases in the previous week (392).
  • The majority of laboratory-confirmed cases this week continue to be 50 years and older (59.3 per cent).
  • Due to a sequencing database issue, variants of concern (VOC) data is not available this week.
  • The Omicron BA.2 sublineage accounted for 90.4 per cent of the variants of concern reported the week of June 5, to 11, 2022. BA.2 sublineage is more transmissible compared to pre-variant 2020 COVID-19 and BA.1 sub-lineages but there is no current evidence of increased severity.
  • Omicron BA.4/BA.5 sublineages have been detected in Saskatchewan (dates of specimen collection May 22-29; n = 6 cases). BA.4/BA.5 have demonstrated increased transmissibility and vaccine escape, but there is no current evidence of increased severity.
  • There were 12 newly-reported COVID-19 deaths (three within the week, and nine that occurred earlier (February 20, 2022 to June 11, 2022). This is a decrease from the previous week (17).
  • There were 18.6 COVID-like illness patients per 1,000 emergency department visits which is a decrease from last week (20.5 per 1,000).
  • Two (2) confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care and care home settings were reported this week.
  • Immunization rates for primary series and booster uptake have remained stable over the last four weeks. Of the eligible populations five and older, 81.1% have completed a series.
  • Among the population 18 years and older, 52.7 per cent had received at least one booster vaccination.
  • As of June 19, 2022, there have been 557 Paxlovid prescriptions filled, and there have been 43 Remdesivir prescriptions with a total of 121 infusions completed.
  • Almost 21.4 million rapid antigen test kits have been distributed in the province. They are easily accessible at more than 600 locations.

COVID-19 hospitalizations are up in Saskatchewan after months of decline.

The Saskatchewan government released new COVID data for the first time in almost a month Thursday. It covers the period of June 26 to July 16.

It shows 229 COVID hospital admissions within that time — about 76 per week. That's compared to 67 hospitalizations in the week of June 19 to 25.

The Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sublineages are now the dominant strains detected in Saskatchewan, according to the report.

Dr. Julie Kryzanowski, the province's deputy chief medical health officer, confirmed Wednesday that COVID infections and hospitalizations have been increasing over the last few weeks.

The province confirmed 628 new COVID cases during the reporting period, according to the data.

"This is a reverse in trend because in preceding months, up until the summer, we had been seeing a steady decline in COVID hospital admissions," Kryzanowski said.

"That's not a surprise that we're seeing this trend in the province. It is similar to what we're seeing in other parts of the country with a wave of Omicron that is being driven really by the BA.5 sublineage."

The new report says 15 people with COVID were in the ICU over the course of the reporting period.

It also detailed 22 more deaths of people with the disease. Fourteen of those deaths happened from June 26 to July 16, while eight occurred from Sept. 5, 2021, to June 25 of this year but were not previously reported...

COVID-19 case numbers are increasing in Saskatchewan.

On Thursday afternoon, the province reported 25 new COVID-19-related deaths for the period of Aug. 14 to Sept. 10, an average of about six per week.

The province said that period yielded 1,932 confirmed cases, compared to 1,524 in the previous monthly update released on Aug. 18.

In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Saskatchewan's Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said that the increase in cases was expected.

"What we saw in other provinces, and what we predicted, was that we would see a gradual increase in COVID transmission, and that's what we're seeing over August and September," Shahab said.

He said COVID's upward trend is likely to continue for another month or two before numbers come down slightly.

"We don't think it's going to go a high as it did in the spring with Omicron."..

It's a figure you won't find easily on the province's website but it's a grim milestone of the COVID-19 pandemic — Saskatchewan has now recorded 1,507 confirmed deaths due to COVID-19.

The province's latest monthly epidemiology report also shows Saskatchewan has continued to record more COVID-19 deaths this year than it did in 2021.

The province reports 552 confirmed COVID-19 deaths between Jan. 1 and Sept. 10 of this year — 88 more deaths than the 464 COVID-19 deaths reported during the same period in 2021.

One expert says the figures should serve as a stark reminder that COVID-19 continues to pose a threat to many in the province...

COVID-19 viral loads are rising once again in the wastewater of several Saskatchewan cities, the most recent data from the University of Saskatchewan shows.

Since the summer of 2020, a group of researchers from the U of S have analyzed wastewater samples from Saskatoon, North Battleford and Prince Albert in search of traces of the COVID-19 virus.

Prince Albert data from the latest reporting period, which goes up to Sept. 12, showed a 66.2 per cent week-over-week increase in SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA load in the city's wastewater.

The data is based on the averages of three daily measurements during the reporting period, and shows the third highest value ever reported since the study began two years ago...

Flu hospitalizations climbing in Sask. as province records 39 more COVID-19 deaths in latest report
There have now been 699 confirmed COVID-19 deaths to date in 2022

The latest data released by Saskatchewan's Ministry of Health shows a jump in the number of influenza cases, as the number of deaths in the province from COVID-19 also continues to climb.

Over the two-week reporting period from Oct. 23 to Nov. 5, Saskatchewan recorded 39 confirmed COVID-19 deaths.

There have now been 699 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in 2022, according to a CBC calculation based on provincial data.

The province no longer provides the total number of COVID-19 deaths in its reports.

The 699 COVID-19 deaths recorded so far this year is lower than the 710 reported during the same time period in 2021...

Deaths connected with COVID-19 continue to plague Saskatchewan, a new report shows.

Between Nov. 20 and Dec. 3 another 41 people died while infected with the virus, according to the province's latest Community Respiratory Illness Surveillance Program [CRISP] situation report.

One person was in the 20-59 age category, while the other 40 deaths were people 60 and older.

No deaths from influenza were reported during the same time period.

There have now been more COVID-19 deaths this year (780) than the 776 recorded during the same time last year.

Case counts for both COVID-19 and influenza are down slightly from the previous reporting period, but remain high...
