BEIJING - Police in a north China city said on Monday that they have sentenced a man to two years of "labour re-education" for spreading rumours of an outbreak of the SARS virus in the city.

The man, surnamed Liu, was sentenced on Sunday to labour re-education "in accordance with the law", according to a police statement in Baoding city in Hebei province. The announcement was published on the Baoding public security bureau's website, which did not disclose the man's surname.

Liu worked as an administrator for a website and in a bid to improve traffic spread "false information" that a Baoding hospital had confirmed a case of SARS, the statement said.

"The false information ... had an impact and disrupted the social order," the statement said.

In the latest incident, China's health ministry denied that SARS had resurfaced in Hebei after Hong Kong's health authorities asked them to ascertain the rumour, Hong Kong's Department of Health said last Thursday.

Several people were hospitalised in a Baoding hospital for a common cold virus called an adenovirus, China's health ministry said last Saturday, adding that it had ruled out SARS and avian flu as the cause.

I am also going to say that once again, we have no idea what is really going on in a disease situation in China.

It is always a wrong direction to enter in direct collision with an entity without exchange information correctly.

Influenza A and B are circulating in China with a substantial flu B activity as reported by FluNet service at WHO website.

Overcrowded placed such as prisons, barracks, schools are usually the cauldron of a lot of pathogen, especially if enteroviruses.

I agree, however, since China has not been forthcoming about the H5N1 cases, why should we believe anything they say about any disease status?

Furthermore, why did they put the web site operator in jail for 2 years after a 1 week investigation/trial/sentencing if this is only a rumour? I think the Chinese authorities have mishandled this situation.

I think this situation could even be a domestic uprising of some sort. A large labor camp is located in Baoding. The government recently added 1000 police to the streets there. How do we even know, for sure, that this is any kind of disease problem? The hospital officials said, when contacted by news reporters, that everything was operating normally in the hospital, but clearly via pictures and other reports, there was a guard(s) posted outside.

How do we know anything? Really......?

I believe the report that the illness is due to adenovirus 55, and I also believe that there may have been one or two deaths prior to diagnosis. It's too specific of information and too random to simply be manufactured. If there was a true SARS outbreak (or an uprising) that they wanted to cover up, they could blame it on something far more routine (H1N1, say) than a strain of adenovirus with only one previously reported outbreak. And given reports from other countries of other adenovirus outbreaks in military barracks, it isn't really surprising. And given that adenovirus is contaigous person-to-person, isolating sick patients is not surprising. And given the rarity of reports of adenovirus 55, it really could have taken two weeks to diagnose. It wouldn't exactly be the first thing tested for.

I also believe that the false report of "SARS" was due to the initial undiagnosed nature of the outbreak, as well as the use of isolation/quarantine.

What is horrific is the immediate knee-jerk response to imprison the reporter for what is at worst a simple error (perhaps reporting "SARS" instead of "ARI" or misunderstanding what "SARS" really meant) and was at most uninformed speculation. Very poor response.
