Re: SARS outbreak in China a rumor: says (Taiwan) CDC

If at least 100 (and several hundred according to the initial post) people have been reportedly hospitalized due to respiratory infection with only one death reported, SARS would be an unlikely suspect, with an estimated CFR from the 2003 outbreak of 10%-18%.

H1N1 would be a far more likely culprit. Remember, even in Mexico in 2009, the first H1N1 cases were mistakenly reported as "SARS".

From several Weibo posts. Certainly sounds like this hospital has an ARI outbreak, and perhaps an unexplained respiratory fatality.

讀80後: There is a rumour in Baoding that 252 Hospital had isolated a SARS patient. I wish that it was just a rumour. Everyone should treat it rationally and the rumour stops. Go China! Go Baoding! Go 80′s

糖鍋子: I really wish that it was just a rumour. However, a floor of Baoding 252 Hospital is isolated, and there is even armed police guarding. Just go there and see. Whether it is serious or not, I hope that related department would make annoucement

[snip]

Today I wanted to have vaccine injection. However, a doctor said 252 Hospital is closed because of a mutated SARS virus. That is really frightening.

[snip]

There is a case of mutated SARS in Baoding. The patient was a soldier in Baoding Hospital and he is dead. And the hospital has stopped receiving patients.

[snip]

1. I heard the rumour half a month ago. It is not SARS. It is stronger than SARS.
2. I heard that Baoding 252 Hospital didn’t accept patients anymore. It was said that there were soldiers and the contagiousness was very great. However, it wasn’t SARS. The fever could be brought down but was uncontrollable. The fever could be brought down in the morning and it would come back on the afternoon or evening. That’s what I heard. Please confirm. Thank you.
3. It wasn’t happened in 252 hospital. It was happened in the school of PLA. A group of soldier ate bad things and their fevers couldn’t be brought down. 252 Hospital suspects that it is SARS. Those solders have already been isolated. The hospital has blocked info exchange. Everybody please don’t go there. I have relatives in there. They told me today.

XXOO:Hubei Baoding No. 252 Hospital of PLA. Now they have received more than 100 patients.
■■■■■: There is rumour about Baoding No.252 Hospital. However, it is not very detailed.
XXOO: Mutated SARS. The first patient is from the PLA school in Qingyuan, Baoding. Most of the patients in the hospital are young soldiers. Because this is a PLA hospital.
■■■■■: What about the symptons? Are they same as SARS? Fever?
XXOO: It was said that Baidu News and Baoding News would release info. However, I don’t know the reason for not releasing news. It was transmitted through upper respiratory tract

Chinese Netizens Claim SARS Has Returned Blog posts say several have already died

Netizens in China are raising the alarm about the return of a deadly illness—they say SARS is back in China, and Chinese officials cannot be trusted to keep people safe.

Posts on well-known blog sites such as Baidu, Tianya, and Weibo in mainland China and the Golden Forum in Hong Kong say that: hospitals in China are once again seeing SARS patients; several patients have died; and nearly 100 are quarantined.

SARS—the acronym stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome—appeared in 2003, infecting over 8000 people in 26 countries, and causing 774 deaths, according to an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, which describes SARS as the 21st century’s first pandemic.

According to the netizens’ posts, SARS has appeared in two spots in northeastern China: Baoding in Hebei Province and in Dalian City in Liaoning Province. Local residents in Baoding also told Epoch Times reporters that there were SARS cases in the area.

According to an article in CNA, the Taiwan news service, on Feb. 23 Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control asked officials in Beijing to confirm whether SARS has reappeared. Later, the deputy director of Taiwans’ Centers for Disease Control, Zhou Zhihao, announced that China’s Department of Public Health denied there was another outbreak of SARS.

According to a netizen, Hong Kong officials were given the same answer.

Anderson Chen Xingchang posted a message on Sina blog: “Regarding the hearsay that the No. 252 Hospital in Baoding had found SARS patients recently, Hong Kong Department of Health has communicated with China’s Department of Health, and learned that the initial result indicated it was not SARS. Related departments in China will release the information later.”

In response to the official denials, netizens reminded each other of Beijing’s cover-up of SARS in 2003. One of them said, “Be on your guard! If you trust mainland China’s information channel, even if you trust 5 percent of it, you will die. Do you still remember what happened when SARS broke out years ago?”
