I really don't know what to make of this. I don't think they really suspect 1873 cases of SARS, as even one case of SARS at this point would be major international news.

Here is the original source for that report. They really did use the Russian word for SARS, but they mention an increase in cases as compared to last year - there haven't been any SARS cases in the world in the past 5 years.

These could simply be colds or seasonal flu. They are school age kids. If this was SARS it would be all over the news. They might mean simptoms simular to SARS. They could simply use the word to describe respitory infections. I do not believe this is SARS coronavirus.

I fully agree. No one has died. This isn't the SARS coronavirus. This is just a bad source that is being sloppy with the language not really knowing what SARS means. The Russian ProMed moderator didn't even feel the need to mention that in his comments.

That's why this wasn't posted in the SARS forum. If I thought this was SARS, I would have posted it there, with some alarming title like "1873 cases of SARS in Russia!!!"

You've got to be careful with stories out of Russia. Dates are not accurate. Stories are not accurate. Russia is probably the hardest to track. Next would be Vietnam......

The problem isn't Russia, per se, but the Russian media. They are sensationalist and don't have too good of an understanding of infectious diseases in general. Remember the SARS train in April. That was obviously wrong at first reading, but it took several days for everyone to realize that.

And I think Egypt is worse than Vietnam - remember that "outbreak" in Alexandria?

If a moderator wants to, he could change this title to "Saratov, Russia: Bad source reports common respiratory illnesses as SARS".
