Otherwise healthy woman dies from swine flu

An otherwise healthy 43-year-old woman has died from the swine flu, making her the sixth person in the county to die from the H1N1 virus who did not have an underlying medical condition, San Diego County health officials said Tuesday.
The woman felt sick, sought medical attention and died at a hospital Nov. 5, said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer in an interview.
Other deaths of people without underlying medical conditions include a 64-year-old man who died July 9; a 33-year-old woman who died July 20; a 32-year-old man who died Aug. 11; Alitza Ortiz Sanchez, 5, of Otay Mesa, who died Oct. 10; and a 35-year-old man who died Oct. 18.
County health officials originally reported the death of Adela Chevalier, 20, from Escondido, as an otherwise healthy person who died of swine flu. That was later corrected when the Centers for Disease Control decided that obesity was an underlying medical condition in swine flu cases, Wooten said. Her death on June 15 has been reclassified as a person having an underlying medical condition.
About 20 percent of the deaths in San Diego County related to the swine flu list the H1N1 virus as the sole cause of death, Wooten said. Nationally, the rate is about 30 percent.
Besides the 43-year-old woman, three new swine flu deaths were reported in the county, all of whom had underlying medical conditions: A 58-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and Martha Castillo, 29, of El Cajon, who died Nov. 4 about two weeks after giving birth, Wooten said.
A total of 36 deaths associated with the swine flu have been reported in San Diego County since the virus was identified. Four of those victims lived outside the county.
Additionally, 564 people with swine flu have been hospitalized in San Diego County.
As always, health officials recommend anyone with flu-like symptoms to stay home and, if they feel worse, to seek medical help.
On the vaccination front, there is still a very limited supply of the H1N1 nasal spray vaccine available at the county's health clinics, officials said. The spray works on children and young adults between the ages of 2 to 24, and adults between the ages of 25 to 49 who are frequently around infants less than 6 months old, officials said. The nasal spray vaccine is not approved for use in people with ongoing medical conditions or women who are pregnant, officials said.
