Salvador on Emergency Diarrhea Alert
San Salvador, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) El Salvador s Ministry of Health decreed a state of emergency due to 16 children dead from diarrhea or gastroenteritis this year, and more than 21,200 cases currently suffering the illness.
Health authorities consulted 40,500 patients with rotaviral diarrhea between January 2006 and May 2007, an ailment that has affected 37,924 Salvadorians to date, with a daily average of 681 people sickening daily. A total 23 people have died since January, both adults and minors.
Emergency alert was emitted in western Sonsonate and Santa Ana, on the border with Guatemala, and central San Salvador and La Libertad, the hardest hit region with 70 percent of ill people live.
Those in charge of assisting the sick asked the government to supply medication, more staff and necessary resources.
