From 1 August 2011 to 27 August 2012, 117 confirmed cases of S. Stanley infections have been reported in five EU Member States, for which Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern is available and identical. For 140 additional S. Stanley infections reported in these MS, the PFGE pattern is not available.

As the source of infection and potential vehicles are not yet identified or confirmed, it is likely that additional cases of S. Stanley infections will be reported in the affected and other EU Member States. ECDC is coordinating the epidemiological investigation with the Member States.

On 9 July, Belgium reported an outbreak of Salmonella Stanley through the EPIS-FWD platform. Subsequently, Austria, Czech
Republic, Germany and Hungary reported cases of S. Stanley sharing the same PFGE pattern as the Belgian outbreak strain.

The descriptive epidemiology indicates a transmission originating from a persistent common source or multiple sources in the
EU that are contaminated with indistinguishable isolates.

Food and veterinary investigations are ongoing at the EU level to identify the source of the outbreak.

Update of the week

States in relation with a nalidixic acid resistant strain with an indistinguishable XbaI-PFGE pattern. For another 140 S. Stanley
infections reported in these MS, the PFGE pattern is not available.

Estonia: 19 Hospitalized in Fast Food Salmonella Outbreak

Salmonella is the suspected cause of an incident that has landed at least 19 people in the hospital after they consumed food from Tallinn's Taco Express. So far eight cases of the disease have been confirmed.

Health Board epidemiology adviser Kuulo Kutsar told uudised.err.ee that in addition to the 19 hospitalized, 10 others were diagnosed with similar complaints but were sent home because their symptoms were not severe.

Patients were those who had visited the centrally-located restaurant between September 1 and September 3. The Health Board closed the restaurant the following day and is assessing the situation.

Affected countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary; serological evidence suggests a common source.

From 1 August 2011 to 5 September 2012, EU Member States reported 375 cases of Salmonella Stanley.

The number of cases rose progressively and continuously each month from April to August 2012.

Investigations are ongoing regarding the possible source by relevant national food safety/veterinary authorities in close collaboration with the public health authorities. ECDC is facilitating a coordinated response for the investigation related to humans cases.

EU agencies support rare Salmonella Stanley incident

Upon request from the European Commission, the European Food Safety Authority and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have jointly provided advice on an on-going outbreak of a rare type of Salmonella.

The Salmonella Stanley infection involving 167 confirmed and 254 probable cases has been reported in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Poland.

Food and veterinary investigations conducted in these Member States suggest a likely connection to the turkey production chain and the outbreak.

The European agencies were asked to provide this joint advice given the rarity of the Salmonella type but stress the importance of putting this incident into the context of the 100,000 human cases of salmonellosis reported in the EU each year.

Nevertheless, the agencies take the opportunity to highlight the importance for persons working in the food chain at all levels (from production to catering) as well as consumers to be very strict with personal (hand washing) and food hygiene (avoid cross contamination between ready-to-eat and raw meat) particularly when handling raw turkey meat at this time.
