SEOUL, May 9 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's veterinary quarantine agency said Wednesday that its plans to provide 600 bird flu detection kits to Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries this month.

The detection kits are used for on-site tests to determine if poultry have come down with the deadly disease, which can be transmitted to humans. It can check for signs of bird flu in less than 20 minutes of the sample being run through the kit.

National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service said the kits are to be given to 19 animal health experts who are undergoing a week-long training program in South Korea.

They are from Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Brunei and the Philippines.

The training program and distribution of the detection kits were agreed upon in November 2006.

Southeast Asian countries have had the greatest number of reported bird flu cases due to the close proximity of animals and humans. Most of these countries have not been able to effectively cope with outbreaks since samples are sent to laboratories for detailed analysis.
