AI outbreak confirmed

2014/01/17 21:20 / (ATTN: CORRCTS AI strain from H5N1 to H5N8 in second para)

SEJONG, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean government on Friday announced an outbreak of avian influenza at a local farm, saying that a DNA test has confirmed ducks on the farm were infected with a highly pathogenic form of the virus.

"Poultry deaths at the farm were caused by a highly virulent strain of the H5N8 virus," the agriculture ministry said.

On Thursday, a suspected AI case was reported at the farm in Gochang, some 300 kilometers southwest of Seoul in North Jeolla Province.

Provincial quarantine authorities culled more than 20,000 ducks Friday after a preliminary test indicated a possible AI outbreak.

Media Reporting Korean Poultry Outbreak Due To H5N8

# 8183

A bit of a surprise this afternoon as multiple media outlets in South Korea are describing their current avian flu outbreak (see South Korea Confirms HPAI Outbreak In Poultry) as not coming from H5N1 as originally suspected, but from a rarely reported H5N8 strain.

First a machine translation of a couple of the reports, after which I?ll return with a little more about this avian flu strain.

AI for the first time in Korea What is onset .. H5N8 type
AP | 01/17/14 21:42 input (revised 17/01/14 21:52)
(Three kinds AP) Kim Seung - Wook reporter = Jeonbuk avian influenza outbreaks in Gochang (AI) is a highly pathogenic form of H5N8 was confirmed last.
Is four times the national past outbreaks of highly pathogenic AI H5N1 type was small, but all types of domestic outbreak of H5N8 is the first time.
Agriculture, forestry and livestock quarantine 17 am Central time, even in the past, such as outbreak of H5N1 AI virus believed to brother, but an analysis of nucleotide sequences of serotype H5N1 type and other forms of H5N8 was confirmed.

Another report, this time from Kyodo News.
Culling of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Korea duck, fear of expansion
The 17th, avian influenza virus toxic (H5N8 type) is detected from the duck farm in North Jeolla Province Takashi-gun high in the southwest, SEOUL, South Korea] Joint Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Ministry of Food 20 001 Hinayaku of duck of this farm It revealed that it has sacrificed Senba.
On the same day, suspicion of avian influenza infection have been reported in duck farmers going with Buan County, a distance of about 10 km from the farmers, fear of the expansion came out. The increase in the second from the top in the "warning" alarm level, the ministry has strengthened the protection posture.
According to the ministry, the virus of the H5N8 type to have been detected in South Korea that for the first time.
Assuming that these reports are correct, this would be the first large outbreak of H5N8 in poultry that I am aware of, certainly in the past decade anyway.

There are two broad categories of avian influenza; LPAI (Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza) and HPAI (Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza).

  • LPAI viruses are quite common in wild birds, cause little illness, and only rarely death. They are not considered to be a serious health to public health. The concern is (particularly with H5 & H7 strains) that LPAI viruses have the potential to mutate into HPAI strains.
  • HPAI viruses are more dangerous, can produce high morbidity and mortality in wild birds and poultry, and can sometimes infect humans with serious result. The type of bird flu scientists have been watching closely for the past decade has been HPAI H5N1 (and to a lesser extent HPAI H7s & H9s).

And indeed, LPAI (low path) H5N8 has been detected in the past, including from samples collected from ducks in 2002 in New York State (see below) and in Europe, as with A/mule duck/Bulgaria/328/2011(H5N8)

As we?ve seen with the relatively benign LPAI North American H5N1 vs. the virulent Asian HPAI H5N1 virus, there can be major differences in the virulence and behavior of similarly named strains.

Last year, in the journal Veterinary Microbiology, this report was published on its detection in China between 2009-2010, and in this case, it appears to have been a highly pathogenic version in Chickens.

Abstract

One H5N8 and three H5N5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses which derived their HA genes from the Asian H5N1 lineage were isolated from poultry during 2009-2010 in mainland China. Pathogenicity studies showed that these viruses were all highly virulent to chickens, while they varied from moderate to high virulence in mice and from mild to intermediate virulence in mallards.
Phylogenetic analyses showed that these viruses were reassortants bearing the H5N1 backbone while acquiring PB1, NP and NA genes from unidentified non-H5N1 viruses, and had developed into three distinct genotypes (B-D). Molecular characterization indicated that all these viruses might resist to antiviral agents.
Our findings highlight the emergence and development of HPAI H5 viruses of other NA subtypes in H5N1 endemic areas and their potential threat to poultry industry and public health.
More evidence (as if we needed it) of the dynamic nature of these avian viruses and their ability to evolve, reassort into new hybrids, and perhaps, pose additional threats to poultry and humans alike.

Low-pathogenic avian flu hits Idaho game farm

Lisa Schnirring Staff Writer
Sep 5, 2008 (CIDRAP News) ?
Agriculture officials in Idaho announced yesterday that it is investigating an outbreak of low-pathogenic avian influenza at a game farm in the southwestern part of the state after a federal lab confirmed the virus in pheasants.
The virus has been identified as subtype H5N8, according to a Sep 3 report that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) filed with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The farm contains about 30,000 game birds that are raised for hunting activities, the report said. Besides pheasants, the farm has chukars, partridges, and mallard ducks.

State officials quarantined the farm on Aug 29 but have not culled any birds at the site, located in Payette County. However, Larry Hawkins, a USDA spokesman, said 300 birds that the farm shipped to California for a bird dog event before the virus was detected were quarantined and culled, the Associated Press (AP) reported today.

The farm's owner did not report an unusual number of bird deaths, but in late August sent three dead pheasants to a lab at Pennsylvania State University for a diagnostic work-up, according to the OIE report.

The lab found Pasturella and Mycoplasma in the samples. Routine tests also revealed avian influenza. Sequence testing at the USDA's National Veterinary Services Laboratory led to the H5N8 finding on Sep 3.

The virus seems to trace back only to the pheasant pen, which contains about 1,000 birds, the report said.

Officials have not determined the source of the virus but suspect that it came from contact with wild birds. Bill Barton, a veterinarian with Idaho's Department of Agriculture, told the AP that the pheasants were kept in an outside pen that was covered with plastic mesh. He said they could have been exposed to the virus from wild birds that flew or roosted overhead.
David Halvorson, DVM, a veterinary pathologist and avian flu expert at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, told CIDRAP News that a wild-bird source of the virus sounds plausible. "They [the game birds] are like live decoys. They'll attract wild birds to their pens because of the feed and water," he said.

Though low-pathogenic H5N8 hasn't been seen in the United States over the past several years, there's nothing alarming about finding the virus at the Idaho farm, he said. "It's not unusual to find an oddball low-path virus."

Barton said the findings of the investigation will determine how long the birds should be quarantined and if culling is necessary, the AP reported. He said authorities are testing birds at farms within a 2-mile radius of the site and disinfecting the affected game farm.

South Korea confirms bird flu, expands culling

SEOUL Sat Jan 18, 2014 7:38am IST

(Reuters) - South Korea confirmed the outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu on Saturday and said it would expand the culling of birds to a radius of 3-km (1.9 mile) around a duck farm, but a nationwide suspension of poultry shipment was considered premature.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said the case reported at a farm in the southwestern county of Gochang, about 300 km (186 miles) from Seoul, was of the highly pathogenic H5N8 strain.

A cull of 21,000 birds at the farm has been completed and authorities are widening the cull to a 3-km radius of the site but there are no indications of a wider spread of the outbreak, a ministry official said on Saturday.

The strain was previously identified in a 2010 case reported in China and is largely similar to the H5N1 type, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said.

South Korea confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza
Republic / Efe | Seoul Published on 18/01/2014

South Korea on Saturday confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic in a duck farm bird flu and found a suspect in another case , which means the return of the disease in 2011 forced the slaughter of three million birds in China . The Ministry of Agriculture Seoul announced that the outbreak of avian influenza detected in Eve on a farm Gochan County , about 300 kilometers southwest of Seoul , is part of the highly pathogenic H5N8 strain , very similar to the better known H5N1 .

After detecting the outbreak until Saturday 21,000 ducks have been slaughtered on the farm and , after confirming the presence of the H5N8 strain , the Ministry has decreed that all are slaughtered poultry in a radius of three kilometers. In addition, they have begun to take initial quarantine in 24 farms purchased the farm ducks affected by the outbreak.

The Government would soon enact extreme measures such as banning the trade in these animals across the country or the retention of all the birds and staff on farms in the affected areas .

In fact , in another farm in Buan , adjacent to Gochang county has detected another possible outbreak of bird flu that has killed 90 ducks, while others live with symptoms of this disease.

Pending further analysis , the Agriculture Ministry said , however, that the new case would have no connection to the confirmed outbreak of H5N8 in Gochang , since there has been no exchange of birds between the two farms.

South Korea since late 2011 suffered an outbreak of bird flu forced to sacrifice more than three million poultry.

Health authorities opened an investigation Saturday to determine what killed about 1,000 ducks in a southern county recently hit by an outbreak of avian influenza (AI).

The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency found the flock of migratory birds dead in a reservoir in North Jeolla Province a day earlier and began an investigation to confirm a possible link to AI, according to the provincial government.

The investigation comes after bird flu was confirmed in thousands of ducks at a duck farm in Gochang, a nearby village in the same province.

It was the first case of AI since May 2011 in South Korea. More than 3 million poultry were slaughtered at the time in connection with the virus.

If AI is confirmed, it would be the first case of the virus in migratory birds in South Korea, authorities said, adding that such a result would have major ramifications. (Yonhap News):tiphat:http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20140118000040

By Kim Da-ye

More than 20,000 ducks were culled at a poultry farm in Gochang, North Jeolla Province, Friday after the first outbreak of avian influenza in the nation since 2012 was confirmed.

After analyzing blood serum from the ducks, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency confirmed that the virus was the highly pathogenic H5N1. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs plans to impose intensive quarantine measures including a lockdown of all poultry farms in the affected areas.

Another farm in Buan in the same province that breeds ducks for consumption also reported an outbreak Friday. The agriculture ministry said that some 90 ducks have already died, showing suspected symptoms of avian influenza.

The duck farm in Gochang, about 300 kilometers southwest of Seoul, has supplied some 173,000 ducklings to 24 farms across the country, according to officials from the provincial government, raising fears that the outbreak could become widespread.

No symptoms were found among the duckling transported to the 24 farms, Friday, although investigations have been slowed due to restricted travel, officials said.

The breeding farm reported Thursday that its birds seemed to be exhibiting symptoms of avian influenza, including slowed egg production.

As soon as the government confirmed the outbreak, it immediately launched preventive measures, including the cull, while banning people from entering 13 nearby farms in the province. The slaughtered ducks were wrapped in special-purpose plastic sheets and buried in a pit on the farm.

The Gochang farm?s ducklings were distributed to 16 farms in North Chungcheong Province, three in South Chungcheong Province, two in Gyeonggi Province and three in North Jeolla Province, according to officials.

The quarantine agency is examining the blood serum of these ducklings as well, and the results are expected today.

The provincial government is trying to find out the causes of the outbreaks, suspecting that migratory birds might have spread the virus. The last case of highly transmissible avian influenza in Korea was reported in May 2011.:tiphat:http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2014/01/116_149992.html

(2nd LD) Authorities open probe into possible bird flu in the wild

2014/01/18 22:49
SEOUL/SEJONG Jan. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea stepped up quarantine measures Saturday to stop the spread of bird flu and launched an investigation into the possibility that the deadly animal disease might have been caused by migratory birds, health authorities said.

The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency on Friday found the flock of about 1,000 ducks dead in a reservoir in North Jeolla Province, and began an investigation to confirm a possible link to aviation influenza (AI), according to the provincial government.

The investigation comes after bird flu virus was found in thousands of ducks at a farm in Gochang, a nearby village in the same province.

...

If AI is confirmed, it would be the first case of the virus in migratory birds in South Korea, authorities said, adding that such a result would have major ramifications. ...

South Korea Quarantines Farms in Two Provinces on Bird Flu

By Rose Kim and Sungwoo Park

Jan 19, 2014 3:28 AM ET

South Korea banned the movement of people who work with poultry and products from two provinces after confirming an outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 at farms in the country?s south.
Authorities have restricted movement in North Jeolla province, South Jeolla province and Gwangju Metropolitan City, about 240 kilometers (150 miles) from Seoul, for 48 hours until midnight Jan. 20, Lee Dong Phil, minister of the agriculture, food and rural affairs, told reporters today.
The ministry confirmed the first outbreak in Gochang, North Jeolla province on Jan. 17, and at a duck farm in nearby Buan county today, according to separate statements on the ministry?s website. South Korea has culled 90,000 birds at six farms within a 500-meter radius, the ministry said today.
?It was inevitable to announce a stand-still in order to prevent further damage,? Lee said. ?We ask all to comply thoroughly with the stand-still instructions.?..:tiphat:http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-...tines-farms-in-two-provinces-on-bird-flu.html

The government on Sunday confirmed that poultry from two duck farms in Buan, North Jeolla Province were infected with the avian influenza virus.

There are now three duck farms with confirmed cases of the virus.

?The case reported on the 17th has been confirmed as the highly pathogenic H5N8 strain,? Kwon Jae-han, director of livestock policy bureau at the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs said.

As for the farm that reported a suspected AI case on Saturday, it has yet to be confirmed whether the infection is caused by the same strain...

Bird flu scare spreads

Additional cases confirmed on two farms

2014-01-19 20:35

The government on Sunday confirmed that poultry from two duck farms in Buan, North Jeolla Province were infected with avian influenza virus.

There are now three duck farms with confirmed cases of the virus.

Kwon also said that poultry kept at farms located within a 500 meter-radius of the concerned facility are being slaughtered.

“(Expansion of the measure across the country) is limited to when a national outbreak is deemed likely. At present, it is considered that (AI) spreading across the country is unlikely,” Kwon said. He added that an order to slaughter the birds at the Buan farms has been issued.

He also said the standstill measure was not issued to the Chungcheong provinces, where ducks from the Gochang farm were distributed, as there is no risk of horizontal transmission.

The ministry, however, appeared to be unsure of the relationship between confirmed AI cases and the death of migratory birds in the area.

On Friday a large number of Baikal teals were found dead in a reservoir located about halfway between the farms in Gochang and Buan. The Baikal teal is a migratory bird that winters in Korea and nearby countries.

“About 50 dead birds were collected. About 200,000 birds came this year, and about 100 have died. In 2005, about 30,000 Baikal teal had died, and it was not AI. It is likely to be a similar case,” an Agriculture Ministry official in charge of treating animal diseases said.

Migratory Birds Behind South Korea Bird Flu Outbreak
By Kwanwoo Jun

South Korea says migratory birds were the likely cause of the country?s first outbreak of bird flu in three years, and stepped up quarantine measures at domestic poultry farms to stop the spread of the disease.

Tests showed the remains of 100 dead migratory wild ducks in a local reservoir contained H5N8 avian influenza virus, the same strain found at poultry farms in North Jeolla Province near the reservoir, the agriculture ministry said in a statement...

'Likely' suggests that the possibility still exists that the wild birds were infected by farm birds.

I'll merge the wild bird death investigation thread in with this one since we know the disease is the same in both the farm and wild birds now.
