S.Korea confirms outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu at 5 poultry farms

Seoul - Nov 18 South Korea has confirmed the country's first outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu virus at two poultry farms, an agriculture ministry official said on Friday.

The outbreaks occurred at the farms in the central and southern parts of the country after the ministry reported last week that the H5N6 strain of the virus had been found in the faeces of migratory birds.

South Korea's last bird flu outbreak occurred in March, when a different strain of the virus was detected at a duck farm, leading to the slaughter of at least 11,000 birds.

The provincial government said Friday that the birds tested positive for H5N6, which is the same strain found earlier in feces of migratory birds collected in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province and around Mankyung River in North Jeolla Province.

The recent case marks the first time the strain was detected in South Korea.

The latest confirmation came just a day after quarantine officials culled roughly 40-thousand-200 chickens in Haenam County in South Jeolla after some of them tested positive for AI.

Chicken Farm in Gyeonggi Reports Suspicious AI Case

Following recent outbreaks of avian influenza(AI) in the North Chungcheong and South Jeolla Provinces, another suspected case of AI was reported in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province.

The Gyeonggi Provincial Government said on Monday that 15-thousand chickens at a farm in Yangju were culled on Sunday after it received reports of the sudden deaths of around 240 chickens.

The local government said the culled poultry birds tested positive for AI in initial inspections, adding that results of a thorough investigation will likely be out on Tuesday.

Health authorities are bracing for the possibility that the chickens in the Yangju farm, like the chickens in North Chungcheong and South Jeolla, were infected with H5N6, a highly pathogenic strain of AI.

Provincial authorities have culled some 15-thousand birds at the farm as a precautionary measure and placed a travel ban on 119 other poultry farms within a three-kilometer radius.

About 240 birds died at the Yangju farm on Saturday, and tested positive for the bird flu strain H5N6.

That's the same strain found recently in the droppings of migratory birds collected in Cheonan, North Chungcheong Province and South Jeolla Province.

H5N6 has killed at least six people in China alone since April 2014, and has also been reported in Vietnam, Laos and Hong Kong.

SEOUL - South Korea confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu at two more poultry farms on Tuesday (Nov 22), taking the number of confirmed H5N6 avian influenza cases in the country to four.

The virus was discovered at duck farms in Cheongju, in North Chuncheong Province, and Muan, South Jeolla Province, said the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs, reported Yonhap news agency.

Some 22,000 ducks were killed in Muan and 8,500 in Cheongju to prevent the possible spread of the disease, according to veterinary authorities.

Four AI cases have been confirmed in the country since Nov. 16 when the first outbreak was reported at a chicken farm in Haenam, 423 kilometers south of Seoul.
Two suspected cases in the central region of Gyeonggi Province and one other have been under close examination, with three more suspected infections from wild birds around the western coastal areas where large wintering sites for migratory birds are located.
The infections were found out to be the highly pathogenic H5N6 strain of bird flu, a new type of virus that was first detected in the country.

South Korea raises bird flu alert as three more cases found at poultry farms

South Korea raised the country's bird flu alert status on Wednesday to its second-highest level following three more outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N6 strain after the first cases were confirmed last week.

The new bird flu outbreaks were discovered at two duck farms in the central and southwestern regions of the country, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday. All 30,500 ducks at the farms have been culled.

One more case was confirmed on Tuesday and the second earlier on Wednesday, the ministry statement said.

The third case was confirmed later on Wednesday at a chicken farm in the city of Yangju, about 38 kilometers (23.61 miles)north of Seoul, the ministry said.

Since the first cases of the H5N6 avian influenza virus were reported in the same region on Friday, a total of five cases have been found and two other poultry farms in other parts of the country are being tested, the ministry said.
