A highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) suspicious livestock occurred at a meat duck farm in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do. This is the first time that a suspicious case of highly pathogenicity has emerged from a poultry farm.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 28th that an H5 type avian influenza antigen was detected as a result of a pre-shipment inspection of ducks from a meat duck farm located in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do at the Jeonbuk Animal Sanitation Test Center. Korea confirms 2nd highly pathogenic bird flu case

South Korea on Wednesday confirmed another highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) case from local poultry farms, sparking further concerns over possible nationwide transmission of the disease.

A suspected case reported from an egg farm in Sangju, 270 kilometers southeast of Seoul, earlier this week tested to be highly pathogenic, according to local authorities.

On Saturday, South Korea confirmed a highly pathogenic AI case at a duck farm in Jeongeup. It marked the first such case to be reported from a poultry farm since March 2018.

South Korea has raised its guard against the disease since late October, when it found a highly pathogenic H5N8 strain of bird flu near a creek in Cheonan, 92 km south of Seoul. It was the first confirmed case of avian influenza from wild birds in 32 months.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said earlier in the day that two additional cases from wild birds were confirmed, in Anseong, 77 kilometers south of Seoul, and Jeongeup in North Jeolla Province, raising the total cases here since October to 12.

According to reporting in KBS World Radio, South Korea’s Agriculture Ministry confirmed cases of bird flu at an egg farm in Sangju.

Veterinary authorities have culled 188,000 chickens at the farm and an additional 180,000 quail at a different farm location owned by the same person.

New case of avian influenza identified in Gyeonggi province

On December 9, a highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza antigen was found at a quail farm in the Kanam-eep parish of the city of zhu, Gyeonggi province. Reported deaths of 300 out of 110 thousand heads of quail.

The farm is located 5 km from another poultry farm where a case of bird flu was confirmed on 7 December. In this regard, the authorities decided to destroy 760 thousand poultry in this and nearby farms within a radius of 3 km.

S. Korea confirms 3 more cases of bird flu at poultry farms

South Korea on Tuesday confirmed three more cases of highly pathogenic bird flu at poultry farms across the nation, raising the total to 16.

Avian influenza of the H5N8 strain was found in samples collected from chicken farms in Gumi, 261 kilometers southeast of Seoul, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Another chicken farm in Imsil County in North Jeolla Province, located 300km south of the capital, reported a suspected bird flu case, which was later confirmed to be H5N8 AI, the ministry said.

A goose at a farm in Cheonan in South Chungcheong Province, 92 kilometers south of Seoul, was also confirmed to be an H5 strain of AI, it added.

The ministry said authorities are culling poultry within a 3-km radius of the farms and issued a standstill order for nearby farms as part of preventive measures.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza is contagious and can cause severe illness and even death in poultry.

The country reported its first highly pathogenic case in 32 months in late October in Cheonan from wild birds. (Yonhap)

S. Korea culls 6.1 mln poultry as farm-related bird flu cases reach 18



SEOUL, Dec. 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has completed the culling of 6.1 million poultry nationwide to curb the nationwide spread of highly pathogenic bird flu, as the total farm-related caseload reached 18, the agricultural ministry said Friday.

The destroyed poultry included 4 million chickens and 1.2 million quails, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Under the local law, poultry within a 3-kilometer radius of farms infected with highly pathogenic bird flu must be culled.

South Korea has reported 18 bird flu cases at farms since November.

The virus has especially spread at a faster pace in South Jeolla Province, which accounted for six infections. Four were from North Jeolla Province.

Local authorities have been vigilant as the virus is expected to haunt local poultry farms down the road, with migratory birds set to continue flying into the country through early next year.

The country reported this year's first highly pathogenic avian influenza case from wild birds in late October. A total of 29 cases were confirmed from wild bird habitats across the country.

S. Korea Reports 28 Highly Pathogenic AI Cases Since Outbreak

South Korea reported nearly 30 cases of the highly pathogenic avian influenza at local poultry farms over the past month since it confirmed its first such case in two years and eight months.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on Sunday, the nation has so far confirmed 28 highly pathogenic AI cases as of Saturday, since it reported the first such case in 32 months at a duck farm in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province on November 26.

As of Friday, more than nine-point-three million ducks and chickens were culled at 163 farms over the past month.

The massive culling and the government's standstill order are pushing up the prices of poultry and eggs, with the production prices of ducks per kilogram soaring over 45 percent from a month earlier.

The production and retail prices of eggs also increased by seven-point-six percent and two-point-five percent on-month, respectively.

S. Korea issues nationwide standstill order on poultry farms amid bird flu cases


SEOUL — South Korea issued a 24-hour standstill order on Sunday on all poultry farms across the country following a series of highly pathogenic bird flu cases.

Until Sunday, all poultry farms and livestock production facilities, including their vehicles and personnel, will be subject to the movement ban, with disinfection work to be carried out during the period, authorities said.



It was the second time this month that a nationwide standstill order was issued over bird flu cases. On Dec. 12, a 48-hour standstill order was issued.

Violators of the order could face up to one year in prison or a fine of 10 million won ($9,000).

S. Korea Reports Another Case of Highly Pathogenic AI at Poultry Farm

South Korea on Monday confirmed another case of the highly pathogenic avian influenza at a local poultry farm, raising the total to 30.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said that the H5N8 strain of the bird flu was detected in samples from a duck farm in Jeongeup, North Jeolla Province.

Quarantine authorities culled poultry within a three-kilometer radius of the farm and issued a standstill order for poultry farms within a ten-kilometer radius for 30 days.

Authorities also plan to conduct AI tests at all the farms in the region.

S. Korea investigating 2 more suspected cases of highly pathogenic bird flu

SEOUL, Dec. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's agricultural ministry said Tuesday it is investigating two additional suspected cases of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza from local farms, with the rising number of infections from wild birds straining the country's anti-virus fight.

Authorities have found two suspected cases from chicken and ornamental bird farms in Gyeonggi Province, which surrounds the capital city, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

South Korea has discovered 30 highly pathogenic avian influenza cases this year, including the latest case that was discovered from a duck farm in Jeongeup, 250 kilometers south of Seoul, the previous day.
