More than 1 million chickens and ducks have been culled because of suspected bird flu outbreaks.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Sunday some 513,000 chickens and 489,000 ducks have been culled since Nov. 16, when suspected infections of the highly pathogenic H5N6 AI virus were first reported.

Hundreds of thousands more may have to be killed in the coming weeks.

The ministry has confirmed an outbreak at a duck farm in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province that was first reported last Wednesday.

Bird flu has been reported in nice areas in the Jeolla, Chungcheong and Gyeonggi provinces so far.

Quarantine measures have been beefed up across South Korea to curb the spread of avian influenza.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced Monday, that bird droppings and contaminated materials cannot be removed from poultry farms nationwide through December ninth.

In addition, poultry transporting vehicles and artificial insemination experts will only be allowed to visit one farm a day until December 16th.

The ministry said these measures have been implemented in order to slow down and stop the fast spread of the highly pathogenic H5N6 strain of AI that has hit local farms.

As of Monday, the AI virus was reported in nine cities and counties in five provinces, including Haenam in South Jeolla and Eumseong in North Chungcheong Province.

Suspected cases were reported in seven other areas, with one-point-three million chickens and ducks culled.

With numerous cases of avian influenza(AI) confirmed, the number of culled chickens has topped two million.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said it investigated three poultry farms over the past five days and confirmed that farms located in Anseong and Icheon, both in Gyeonggi Province, were affected by the highly pathogenic H5N6 strain of bird flu.

Nearly 400-thousand chickens were culled from those three farms alone.

As of Friday, 46 farms in 13 cities and counties in five provinces were found to have been infected with bird flu.
 
South Korea confirms more cases of deadly bird flu

SEOUL (AFP) - South Korea on Wednesday (Nov 30) revealed new cases of a deadly strain of bird flu as the authorities said they had slaughtered two million chickens and ducks in a bid to control the outbreak.

The H5N6 virus was first confirmed on Nov 18 at a farm in central South Korea and it has since spread to farms around the country, with the total number of cases now standing at 46.

The authorities have stepped up quarantine measures, culling birds and restricting animal movements which are feared to spread the virus.

We've culled some two million birds and we will slaughter another one million", an agricultural ministry spokesman said.

Health authorities stressed there had been no cases of human infections from H5N6 in South Korea.

However, between 2014 and April 2016, H5N6 killed six people in China, according to the South's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

The World Health Organisation warned earlier this year that the strain "has caused severe infection in humans" but added "until now human infections with the virus seem to be sporadic with no ongoing human to human transmission".

Report: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said on Sunday a chicken in a farm in Cherwon in Gangwon Province tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza(AI).

It is the first time the H5N6 strain of bird flu was confirmed in Gangwon Province in the central-eastern part of the country since the outbreak was first reported in the southwestern coastal town of Haenam.

A total of 69 farms in seven cities or provinces have confirmed H5N6 cases since November 15th. Only two Gyeongsang Provinces remain unaffected, but experts say it is only a matter of time before it reaches the area.

According to the ministry, around three-million-381-thousand poultry, including two-million-516-thousand chickens, 794-thousand ducks and 71-thousand quails, have been culled nationwide as of Monday morning after the birds were confirmed, or suspected, of having the virus.
