Malaria, diarrhoea kill settlers in crowded Sango Bay camp

Rakai- At least 50 people, including children, have died of malaria and diarrhoea in Sango Bay Camp in Rakai District in less than a year.
The camp was set up last year to accommodate Rwandan and Ugandan pastoralists kicked out of Tanzania over allegedly flouting Tanzanian immigration laws. They have since been kept in the camp under crowded conditions with their animals.
Mr Joseph Turyakira, the chairman of the camp, told journalists last Friday that at least 50 people have died of malaria and diarrhoea which he attributed to the crowded and unhygienic conditions in which they live. He said the terrain is flat and prone to stagnant water ,which forms a breeding ground for mosquitoes. He also said the 4,096 people living in the camp don?t have sufficient latrines.
