Russia Russia will not face swine flu epidemic in 2010 - Onishchenko

MOSCOW, January 3 (RIA Novosti)

There is no threat of an H1N1 influenza epidemic in Russia in 2010, the country's chief sanitary doctor Gennady Onishchenko said on Sunday.

"For us, like in the rest of the world, it [H1N1 influenza] ran its course lightly, thank God," Onishchenko said on Ekho Moskvy radio station, adding that many people were now naturally immune.

"For this strain...to strike these sections of the population again, it must change dramatically," he said.

The head of consumer watchdog Rospotrebnazdor said that there had been 4 million cases of H1N1 flu in Russia in the past three months, noting that the number of flu deaths in Russia in 2009 would not exceed the typical level of about 1,000 people.
