Maps......tell us we've been here before - note all the familiar nearby communities.

Thank goodness, the Russians have good scientists, etc., to chase down mutations, etc. Remember last year's prompt Russian predictions when the birds in ?Crimean Penn started going in circles then falling down dead?

I didn't save my maps from this time last year, however here's one as of 10Jan06, and note the dots near Astrakan - same neighborhood as now. I wonder how many dots we'll be making by Jan 2007?

Re: RUSSIA - Suspicious poultry deaths in Kalmykia

I think they're saying it's not bf but some sort of bacterial(?) infection...

babelfished from Russian:

Re: RUSSIA - Suspicious poultry deaths in Kalmykia

chessplayers do know Kalmykia.
It hosted the world championship recently and it's president
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirsan_Ilyumzhinov)
is also the president of the world chess federation.
Maybe that makes them more open for reporting, I don't know.
At least the chess traffic gives them some internationalism.
Iljumtschinov is a friend of Putin, while former World Champion Kasparov
is in opposition and running for president against Putin.
Chess is politics in Russia.

Nov 7 2006 12:58PM Fowl cholera behind mass poultry deaths in Kalmykia

ELISTA. Nov 7 (Interfax) - The domestic birds that died in the village of Salyn-Tugtun, Kalmykia, in October were infected with fowl cholera, a district administration source told Interfax on Tuesday.

The results of examinations carried out by the Pyatigorsk branch of Stavropol's veterinary laboratory revealed that "the dead birds were not infected with avian flu. Their deaths were caused by fowl cholera," he said.

Fifty-one domestic birds were found dead at four private farms in Salyn-Tugtun. The poultry had been vaccinated against bird flu, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry's southern department said.

Fowl cholera is an infectious avian disease caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida.
