MOSCOW (AP) - The Interfax news agency cites Russia's chief epidemiologist as saying he plans to recommend that Russians refrain from unnecessary travel to the United States because of swine flu.
Interfax quoted Gennady Onishchenko (Gehn-AH-dee Ah-KNEE-shen-kuh) as saying his agency plans to issue the recommendation Friday.
Russian health authorities have already urged travelers to avoid Mexico.
In a radio interview Tuesday, Onishchenko singled out the U.S., Mexico and Canada as countries where there is a threat from swine flu.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday there are now nearly 900 confirmed cases in the United States.
Onishchenko and other officials at his agency could not be reached for comment late Thursday.
