Scientists discover new potentially dangerous fever strain in Russia’s south

According to the Sechenov University, a new strain of the Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever has been discovered

MOSCOW, June 28. /TASS/. Russian scientists have uncovered a new strain of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), the press service of the Sechenov University told TASS on Tuesday.

The Sechenov University noted that the main and most dangerous symptom of the Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever is internal bleeding, also known as internal hemorrhaging. "The disease itself develops rapidly; in severe cases, sudden liver or lung failure can occur after five days of the illness. Death occurs in about 30% of cases, as early as in the second week of the illness. Different versions of the virus cause various severities of the disease," the press service added.

The university noted that the epidemiological situation with the Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever in Russia is difficult. According to scientists, outbreaks are regularly recorded in the Stavropol Region, Rostov, the Astrakhan and Volgograd Regions, Kalmykia, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Karachay-Cherkessia and Kabardino Balkaria.

Scientists study new strain of hemorrhagic fever

June 28, 2022

Sechenov University scientists have discovered a new strain of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus. The study in the south of Russia involved employees of the Stavropol Anti-Plague Institute of Rospotrebnadzor, St. Petersburg Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. Pasteur and the Moscow Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor. A scientific publication with the results of the work
was published in the international peer-reviewed journal PLOS One.

The CCHF virus is common in a number of African countries, the Balkans, the Middle East and some Asian countries, as well as in the south of the European part of Russia. The main sources of CCHF for humans are ticks and livestock. From person to person, the pathogen can be transmitted through close contact with blood and other body fluids. One of the main and most serious symptoms of fever is hemorrhage, hemorrhage. The infection spreads rapidly, in severe cases, after five days of illness, sudden liver or lung failure may develop. Death occurs in 30% of cases, and already in the second week of illness.

Different variants of the virus cause different severity of the disease. The strains of the pathogen studied in the Russian regions belong to the lines "Europe-1" (596 samples), "Africa-3" (one sample) and to a completely new strain "Europe-3" (six samples).

Scientists have found that the risk of severe clinical manifestations, hemorrhagic syndrome and death is higher when infected with the Europa-1 line. The researchers pointed to the need to study in detail the Europa-3 strain in order to assess its pathogenicity, genetic diversity and geographical distribution in Russia.

Outbreaks of CCHF are regularly recorded in Stavropol, Rostov, Astrakhan and Volgograd regions, in Kalmykia, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Karachay-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria. From 1999 to 2020, in the southern regions of Russia, epidemiologists identified 2,361 cases of the disease, 94 patients died.

Vaccines against CCHF for humans and animals have not yet been developed. Treatment is limited to supportive symptomatic therapy.

Director of the Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Transmissible Diseases. E. I. Martsinovsky Sechenov University, MD Alexander Lukashev: “The results of a scientific study of the lines of the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, published today in the media, caused a great resonance. I hasten to inform you that there are no reasons for public concern. This virus has been on the territory of our country for hundreds of years, its different variants do not differ fundamentally, and this discovery is primarily of scientific interest. Scientists are constantly working to study the variability of viruses. Our task is to study in detail the Europa-3 strain line discovered in the Russian Federation, to assess its genetic variations and potential distribution in our country.”
