babelfished from Russian:

"Bird influenza" is extended in the environs of Moscow - already 8 centers. In the capital the 5-kilometer closed zone appeared
Feb 20, 2007

Virus H5N1 in the Moscow area continues to be extended. The new centers of the infection of poultry by the virus of "bird influenza" are revealed on particular podvor'yakh of village Solodovo of Volokolamsk region, in the territory of the populated area the Ershovskiye dachas of the Odintsovskeyeo region and on particular podvor'e in the Moscow city Ramenskoye. In all cases the sick birds were purchased in Moscow".

The day before specialists considered that the new focuies of "bird influenza" among the poultry in the Moscow area, most likely, it will revealed not be. But their hopes were not realized.

Thus, the number of contaminated areas increased to eight - earlier in the Moscow area the cases of development of "bird influenza" were registered in the Domodedovo, the the Taldomskom, Podolskiy and by Naro-Fominsk regions and Zvenigorod. In by Volokolamsk the region bollard 17 head of the infected bird, 25 were destroyed, transfers ITAR-TASS.

Main sanitary doctor RF, leader Rospotrebnadzora to Gennadi Onishchenko confirmed the new facts of the loss of poultry from the "bird influenza". "In the centers are carry ouied [out] disinfection measures, the material for a study is selected from the killed bird, after the people is established medical observation", it noted chapter Rospotrebnadzora.

According to him, by the reason for the case of bird in the the Ershovskom and Solodove, probably, became acquisition by that infected the "bird influenza" of bird on the bird market in Moscow during the same days, when was purchased the bird, whose loss was fixed in the Moscow area earlier.

Along the region on Monday they began to inoculate from the "influenza" the bird, that is contained on particular podvor'yakh. For the inoculations in the region are prepared more than million doses of the vaccine: usually vaccination is carried out by spring and in autumn, and present is begun before the appointed time. Officials assert that situation under the complete control. However, the specialists of the Russian institute of epidemiology and microbiology indicate that situation with the influenza even without that complex and they fear the mutation of virus.

In Moscow the 5-kilometer closed zone appeared

The division head of the anti-epizootic and therapeutic and prophylactic measures of the committee of the veterinary science of the capital Sergey Filatov reported "Interfaksu" that entire existing bird (1924 heads) on the Moscow market "Gardener", which is located on the 14th kilometer MKAD, in the morning of Tuesday was destroyed by bloodless method, with the application of veterinary means. According to him, the corpses of the killed birds are prepared for the removal to the veterinary-sanitary plant "Ekolog".

For the non-admission of the spread of bird influenza around the market "Gardener" together with the prefecture of southeastern region is established the quarantine (threatened zone - 5 kilometers, surveillance zone - 10 kilometers). Twenty-four hour check posts are advanced. Is organized conducting the disinfection of territory and containers, in which was contained the bird, and also the motor transport, which transported bird.

The forces of the disinfection subdivisions of territorial administration of Rospotrebnadzora on Moscow organized the sanitary working of people, which participate in the work on slaughter and collection of bird, it noted Filatov.

At the same time source in the committee of veterinary science noted that Moscow - only transportation terminal point for the bird influenza. Its real center find undoubtedly "somewhere elsewhere on the territory of Russia or other countries".

Onishchenko: not boytes', eat the hens

The main sanitary doctor RF of Gennadi Onishchenko advises Muscovites not to reject the meat of bird in connection with the development of bird influenza several regions of the Moscow area, transfers BY RIA of "News".

"Due to the state until today, there is not in what limitations to sale of bird in the retail outlet network need, and we this do not make", he said in the interview for the television channel of "News".

According to Onishchenko, it is difficult to guess, in what stage this virus can become dangerous for the man.

It called not to inflate the theme of the bird market, where, according to the conclusions of experts, the sick bird was acquired.

According to him, now the market is closed, disinfection concludes. "I think that to pedalirovat' the theme of market absolutely there is no need whatever", said Onishchenko, after adding that the bird, that was realized on the market, it brought from the Moscow area.

It considers that it cannot be excluded and the possibility of the fact that the virus of bird influenza somewhere "winterred" in the Moscow area, but not it was left from somewhere into the region.

Russian Man in Hospital With Suspected Bird Flu — Report
Created: 21.02.2007 11:56 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 12:15 MSK, 40 minutes ago

MosNews

A 43-year old Russian farmer has been taken to hospital after possibly contracting bird flu, Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda reported on Wednesday.

The newspaper said that the man together with his mother purchased a turkey at a Moscow market on February 13 and took it to his farm near the town of Ramenskoye, about 40 kilometers South-East of the Russian Capital. On February 17 the bird suddenly died and after that, other birds on the farm started dying every day.

On Tuesday morning, the farmer discovered that all his geese were dead and called the veterinarian service. Immediately after that he felt feverish and called an ambulance.

The doctors took the farmer and his mother to hospital and veterinarians sealed off and disinfected the farm and the surrounding area.

The farmer’s mother was released from hospital after tests and the man himself remains in contagious diseases section with suspected bird flu diagnosis.

On Tuesday, chief sanitary inspector for Moscow Region, Olga Gavrilenko, told the press that there were neither registered nor suspected cases of bird flu among humans in Moscow Region.

The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of bird flu that can threaten humans has hit two more localities around Moscow after being confirmed in five other districts, a Russian veterinary official said Tuesday.

“We are as yet unable to confirm the strain (in the two new areas), but the pattern is the same as in the previous cases,” Nikolai Vlasov, head of veterinary surveillance at animal and plant health watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor, told a news briefing.

He did not name the localities. All fowl at the affected farms have been culled and the farms were isolated.

Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that 190 domestic fowl had died between Feb. 10 and Feb. 19 in Moscow and six districts in the Moscow region —- Domodedovo, Odintsovo, Podolsk, Naro-Fominsk, Taldom and Volokolamsk.

Russia's veterinary service predicts more H5N1 bird flu cases in fowl around Moscow

MOSCOW: Russian authorities expect new outbreaks of the H5N1 strain of bird flu in the Moscow region and the surrounding provinces, the veterinary service said Wednesday in a statement sent to other governments.

The virus, which began killing domestic birds in the Moscow suburbs on Feb 9, has been traced to a single animal market just outside Moscow.

Given the large numbers of birds that had been sold at the market, the authorities "expect new outbreaks in the Moscow region" and the surrounding provinces in western Russia, according to the statement sent by the federal veterinary service to the European Union, the United States and other nations.

The veterinary service said the outbreak was contained at one private farm at each location affected. "Quick measures have allowed to contain the virus spread," it said. The service said poultry at locations affected by the outbreak had been culled and several areas had been put under quarantine.

Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said that at least 333 domestic birds have died since Feb. 9 and an additional 1,833 have been culled at eight locations on Moscow's outskirts.

Laboratory tests had identified the virus as similar to the one found in China's Qinghai province, the veterinary service said.

Poultry that died belonged to individuals who had bought birds recently.

Many people in the Moscow suburbs keep small numbers of chickens in their yards.

The veterinary service said it would vaccinate birds in towns and villages where the virus has been spotted.

Officials said several people who had been in close contact with the dead birds were under medical observation, but no one has been infected.

No human cases of bird flu have been reported in Russia, which had its first reported cases of the H5N1 strain in Siberia in 2005. Outbreaks have since occurred farther west, but mostly in southern areas far from the capital.

Since it began ravaging Asian poultry farms in late 2003, the H5N1 strain has killed at least 167 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Although it remains difficult for humans to catch, health authorities across the world are monitoring the strain out of concern it could mutate into a form that easily spreads from person to person and spark a pandemic.

Moscow Region authorities dismiss rumors of bird flu among humans

MOSCOW, February 21 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow Region health authorities dismissed Wednesday rumors of the first human avian flu case in the wake of an outbreak that hit poultry farms in the region last week.

Several Internet sources reported Tuesday that a resident of Ramenskoye, near the Russian capital, who owned poultry contaminated with the deadly bird flu virus had been hospitalized with a high temperature.

"He [the resident of the Ramenskoye district] has been admitted to the infectious diseases ward at a local hospital, but his diagnosis is rhinitis, or simply a common cold," a local health official said.

She said the illness had probably been caused by excessive stress related to the bird flu outbreak, and that all lab tests showed the patient was not contaminated with the H5N1 virus.

Cases of avian flu were registered last Saturday in various districts in the Moscow Region, all of which were traced to a single market in southwest Moscow. The Russian agricultural watchdog confirmed Monday that the outbreak involved the deadly strain of the bird flu virus.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said 150 dead birds were found at private farms in the Domodedovo, the Odintsovo, the Podolsk, the Naro-Fominsk, and the Taldom districts last week, and another 75 were discovered in the Ramenskoye district this week, but that no cases of humans infected with the virus have been registered so far.

According to the World Health Organization, the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu has claimed 167 human lives globally since it first appeared in Asia in 2003. It has since spread worldwide, and scientists fear the virus could mutate into a form transmissible between humans, sparking a global pandemic.
Russia recorded its first cases of avian flu in August 2005, but until now outbreaks have occurred only in southern provinces and in Siberia. The most recent bird flu outbreak occurred in mid-January in the southern region of Krasnodar, but by February it had been contained.

A little more on Vasiliy...

babelfished from Russian:

The inhabitant of Moscow Ramenskogo they hospitalized with the suspicion to the "bird influenza"
Feb 21, 2007

In the district hospital of Moscow Ramenskogo they delivered the 43-summer local resident of Vasiliy Loginov. Physicians revealed in man the symptoms of the "bird influenza", whose epidemic began recently in the Moscow area. If diagnosis is confirmed, it will become the first struck by virus H5N1 Russian.

As he writes in the medium "Komsomol Truth", on 13 February Vasiliy with the mom by Emma by Alekseyevna they purchased on the Moscow bird market "Gardener" for very young turkey, and on 17 February new ward unexpectedly perished. But following it began day after the day to die other birds. Perished hen and the geese, which the owner in his time did not have time to inculcate from the "bird influenza". Despite the fact that entire all around they spoke about the outbreaks of dangerous disease in the Moscow area, Vasiliy to veterinary surgeons to ring did not hurry - were not given to rapid Moore the birds of special importance.

Culmination began on Tuesday in the morning. After visiting, as usual, to nourish feathered, the owner with the horror revealed into the poultry yard that entire floor of useyan by the small carcasses of dead hens and geese. In all fell 75 birds, about which it reported to veterinary surgeons. Doctors immediately reported CHP into all services of city. Thus far to the house of Loginovykh went militiamen and colleagues of sanepidnadzora, in Vasiliy the temperature unexpectedly ran up. The frightened man urgently caused "fast".

To doctors Loginov it reported that in it the "temperature is hearth forty, weakness terrible, although everything in the order was" from the morning. Physicians measured to man the temperature - it turned out that by the arrival of brigade it fell to 37,8 degrees. Nevertheless, Vasiliy they immediately drove away into the hospital. But its house and territory to 300 is meter all around they surrounded and they disinfected.

Together with Vasiliy into the hospital they drove away his mother. In the medical card of man so they indicated: "suspicion on" bird influenza". "Fast", which transported patients, they preliminarily processed by the special disinfectant solution.

They let go the mom of Vasiliy from the clinic immediately after inspection - no alarming symptoms in it they revealed. But they placed Vasiliy into the infectious department. Doctors took in it the blood for the analysis, the results of the studies, which accurately will show, is infected Vasiliy by "bird influenza" or no, they will be known within the next few days.

According to the colleagues of hospital, the temperature in Loginova so did not fall. Furthermore, in the perenervnichavshego man strongly rose pressure. Now Vasiliy find under the strictest observation of infektsionistov.

Let us recall that the main sanitary doctor of Moscow region Olga Gavrilenko she stated on Tuesday that there are no sick people by the "bird influenza" of people in the Moscow area, physicians fixed even not one suspicion to this virus.

Russia suspects exotic birds caused bird flu outbreak
Wednesday February 21, 2007

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russian authorities said Wednesday they suspect illegally imported exotic birds are the source of bird flu cases detected in the Moscow region.

"The responsible agencies are looking at where the bird flu virus that showed up at the Moscow bird market could have come from," Nikolai Vlassov, head of Russia's veterinary services, was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

"We suspect that it was transported by exotic birds illegally brought in from Azerbaijan, Iran or from the Krasnodar region" in southern Russia.

Officials have said repeatedly that no human cases of bird flu had been detected in Russia.

However, the public health department said that anyone with heavy flu or a severe respiratory infection will be tested for the H5N1 virus.

Russia is also investigating whether bird flu has spread beyond the Moscow region following poultry deaths in the nearby area of Kaluga, the state veterinary service said.

"Pathological samples are being examined and we are trying to determine where the birds were purchased, but all cases are similar to those discovered earlier in the Moscow region," Russian veterinary services spokesman Alexei Alexeyenko told Interfax.

The H5N1 bird flu strain has already been confirmed in several districts in the Moscow region, where some 333 farm birds have died, according to the Russian emergencies ministry.

The most dangerous Asian strain of H5N1, potentially fatal to humans who come into contact with infected birds, has been confirmed at two sites in the Moscow area.

The authorities have determined that some of the contaminated birds were bought at Moscow's bird market.

H5N1 had killed 164 people worldwide as of last month. Scientists worry that the virus could mutate and spread among humans.

Qinghai H5N1 Spread in Russia
Recombinomics Commentary
February 21, 2007

Alexei Alexeyenko, spokesman for animal and plant health watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor, said the H5N1 strain was identified in the republic of Adygeya, a region in the North Caucasus.

Bird deaths also have been registered at farms in Dmitrov district, part of Moscow region, and Borovsk district in the Kaluga region, which borders the Moscow region to the south.

The above comments describe further spread of H5N1 in Russia. The two new locations near Moscow are linked to the pet market in the suburbs southwest of Moscow. The number of locations is at least eight, which ring Moscow.

The first two outbreaks are confirmed in this week?s OIE report, which also provides additional information in the three locations in Krasnodar, reported last month. Now there are two more outbreaks in the adjacent Adygeya.

There are also dead and dying birds washing up on the adjacent shores of Abhkazia (see video), although H5N1 infections have been denied.

The expanding outbreaks of H5N1 in Moscow suburbs as well as five outbreaks in Krasnodor / Adygeya near the Black Sea as well as H5N1 outbreaks in southeastern Turkey indicate Qinghai H5N1 is widespread in the region, raising serious doubts about the Abkhazia denials, as well as reporting failures in neighboring countries in the Caucasus as well as the Middle East, where multiple human and poultry H5N1 infections in the Nile Delta have been reported.

6th Case of Bird Flu Found Near Moscow

By Kevin O'Flynn
Staff Writer
Authorities confirmed a new case of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu in the Moscow region Wednesday as environmental inspector Oleg Mitvol called for the source of the outbreak, the Sadovod pet market, to be closed down.

Cases of avian flu have been found in six locations in the Moscow region, and three more locations are under suspicion, said Alexei Alexeyenko, spokesman for the Federal Service for Veterinarian and Vegetation Sanitary Supervision.

Forty-three people who have had contact with the infected birds are now under medical observation, the agency said in a statement.

The outbreak of the deadly virus is the first to be recorded so close to the capital. No humans are known to have contracted the virus in Russia.

Nikolai Vlasov, head of the Federal Service for Veterinarian and Vegetation Sanitary Supervision, said all six cases had been linked to the pet market, located just outside Moscow's southwestern limits.

"We think that it arrived with the illegal transportation of exotic birds from Azerbaijan, Iran or the Krasnodar region," Vlasov said, Interfax reported.

Three Krasnodar villages saw an outbreak of bird flu in January. Five deaths in Azerbaijan have been linked to the virus.

Vlasov earlier this week suggested that birds migrating from Azerbaijan or Iran might have carried the virus to the Moscow region.

Another case of the H5N1 strain was confirmed Wednesday in the North Caucasus republic of Adygea, Interfax reported. Suspicious bird deaths also were reported in the Kaluga region, which is next to the Moscow region.

A total of 448 domestic fowl had been culled in the Moscow region to prevent the spread of the virus, the Agriculture Ministry said. Another 247 birds have died of the virus. In addition, nearly 2,000 birds have been culled at the pet market.

Mitvol, the deputy head of the Natural Resources Ministry's environmental agency, said an inspection of the Sadovod market had found violations of sanitary regulations and a lack of the proper documents to transport animals.

He said his agency had recommended to Mayor Yury Luzhkov that he break the city's lease with the market administration.

Meanwhile, State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov claimed unidentified foreign agents were behind the outbreak. "It is a deliberate project that has been directed against the production [of chickens] and the sale of expensive vaccines, and it was not invented in Russia," Gryzlov said, Interfax reported.

Bird influenza continues to seize all new territories in the Moscow area: yesterday the loss of poultry is fixed in by Dmitrovsk region. Furthermore, bird fall in the adjacent Kaluga province. Rosprirodnadzor required from the city hall of Moscow to liquidate the market "Gardener", which became the source of infection, and the speaker of the State Duma Boris Gryzlov named bird influenza "project for the sale of the expensive foreign vaccines". There is no as yet reliable data about the fact that people infected themselves by mortally dangerous virus, but Moscow authorities already prepared about 300 cots in the infectious hospitals in this case.

The new focuies of bird influenza were discovered yesterday in the village Udino of the Dmitrovskeyeo region and in the adjacent with the Moscow area by Borovsk the region of the Kaluga province. Let us recall that from the Asian strain of the bird influenza H5N1 already perished the bird in the Domodedovo, Podolskiy, by Naro-Fominsk, the Taldomskeye and Odintsovskeye regions. The case of hens with the suspicion on H5N1 was also fixed in the the Ramenskom and by Volokolamsk the regions (results of analyses in these regions they will be finished to 23 February). Veterinary services continue to guess, from where on the capital market "Gardener", which became the source of infection, fell the infected bird. According to the chief for the administration of the veterinary supervision Of rossel'khoznadzora Nikolai Vlasov, H5N1 could "be brought with the exotic birds from Azerbaijan, Iran or Krasnodar edge illegally imported into Russia".

"Gardener" is closed to the quarantine, entire existing there bird is burnt. the Vice-mayor of Moscow Ludmila Shvetsova yesterday she stated that the city hall prepares document about the payment of compensation to the owners of the birds destroyed on the market; however, its size it did not refine. "Rosprirodnadzor repeatedly conducted the testings, which showed that the bird market functions with the disturbance of sanitary standards and in the absence of the necessary documents to the import of animals, explained the Deputy Director of department Oleg Mitvol'. - The correctness of our conclusions proves present situation with the spread in the Moscow area of bird influenza". However, the Mrs. of Shvetsova gave to understand that the market was liquidated or transferred for the feature of city not will be transferred. "But there within the shortest periods must be induced order", she stated vice-mayor.

Meanwhile in Moscow and Moscow area doctors continue to take measures for averting of propagation H5N1. All killed in the centers detections of the virus of hen and turkey they are burnt by veterinary services, furthermore, in the three-kilometer zone around these centers will be destroyed entire poultry. The Mrs. of Shvetsova reported that in Moscow in the required order from the usual influenza will be inculcated the veterinary surgeons, the salesmen of food markets and stores, the colleagues of Moscow zoo, urban it is circus, zoougolkov, pet stores and All-Russian exhibition center, that work with the birds.

The problem of bird influenza did not leave indifferent and the Deputies of the Gosduma, who proposed to summon into the parliament for the dacha of explanations chapter Gennadi Onishchenko's Rospotrebnadzora. "The fatherland in the danger. Situation with the spread of bird influenza collects revolutions", stated at the yesterday's plenary meeting deputy from LDPR Sergey Ivanov. He recalled that the Ukraine and Belorussia already introduced prohibition to the deliveries of chicken from the Moscow area. "From where did arrive at us this infection, and is not this the planned shady transaction? I please Duma security committee to be dismantled with this question", summed up deputy. It supported associate from THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION Nikolai Kondratenko, who completely named situation in the Moscow area the "smelling a little diversion".

Speaker Boris Gryzlov, who connected stir around the bird influenza with the "commercial interests of the producers of foreign vaccines", developed theme. "Bird influenza was always, it earlier 'chumkoy' was called, stated Mr. Gryzlov. - But this is the conscious project, directed toward production and sale of the expensive vaccines, and it was devised not in Russia". The industrial production of the vaccine, which protects people from the bird influenza, in Russia actually can be fixed not earlier than 2008, whereas Goszakaz to its production can be measured by sum of $1 billion (7 it reported about this on 20 February).

Let us note that yesterday appeared the communications about the hospitalization of the inhabitant of Ramenskogo with the high temperature and the suspicion to the infection by bird influenza; however, the main sanitary doctor of the Moscow area Olga Gavrilenko it refuted this information, after stating that in it was discovered the "hypertonic crisis, temperature normal and there are no occasions for the agitations". Nevertheless, authorities already expressed the readiness to isolate 281 cot in the hospitals in the case of the appearance of similar patients. "The patients with the influenza of this form will place into the 1st, 2nd, the 3rd infectious hospital", stated yesterday the leader of the department of public health of the capital Andrey Sel'tsovskiy.
