MOSCOW, October 31. /TASS/. Preventive measures for hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), known as "mouse fever," are insufficient in some regions and need to be strengthened, Gennady Onishchenko, epidemiologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and deputy president of the Russian Academy of Education, told TASS.
"There are still many [detected cases of 'mouse fever']. This means that insufficient attention is being paid in these regions. <…> There's a lack of control over the prevalence of rodents, and that's the result. Therefore, we need to specifically define additional measures, present them to regional leaders, starting with governors, city and district leaders, and implement preventative measures," he said.
At the same time, Onishchenko noted that if we are talking about one and a half thousand cases per year in several regions, such a number of cases in itself does not indicate an outbreak.
Earlier, media outlets reported a massive outbreak of "mouse fever," with over 1,500 people seeking medical attention in various regions of Russia. Following this, Rospotrebnadzor (the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing) announced that it had requested the publication that disseminated the information about the sources and documents used for the publication.
According to Rospotrebnadzor, no outbreaks of mouse fever have been recorded in Russia since the beginning of 2026. The epidemiological situation remains stable and under control, and the incidence rate is within long-term averages.
