Russia's confirmed swine flu cases hit 4,560 - health minister

17:3109/11/2009
LVOVSKY, November 9 (RIA Novosti) - The number of confirmed swine flu cases in Russia has hit 4,560, Health Minister Tatyana Golikova said on Monday.
Speaking at a hospital in a town near Moscow, where she was to oversee the start of a national vaccination campaign, Golikova said the figure was up from 3,122 last week.

The country's sanitary and consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said on Friday that the swine flu death toll has risen to 19. The Moscow Region and regions in Siberia, the Far East and northwest have been hit the hardest by the H1N1 virus.

Mass swine flu vaccinations began in five Russian regions on Monday. Medical staff, employees at electric power and water treatment plants and other facilities will be inoculated first.

Four vaccines against the virus have been tested and registered in Russia. The government has allocated 4 billion rubles ($140 million) to buy the initial 43 million doses of vaccines. Russia plans to have 35.5 million doses before the end of the year.

Golikova warned last week against panic over the virus, which has caused a shortage of medical masks and antiviral medicines in clinics and retail drug stores, and pledged to step up control of drug stores' supplies and prices.

Shop assistants and pedestrians wearing medical face-masks have become a common sight in Moscow and other Russian cities. Fall holidays have been prolonged in many schools in the capital and other big cities.

The World Health Organization said on Saturday about 6,100 people have died from swine flu worldwide, with the total number of officially confirmed cases exceeding 482,000 in 199 countries.

The epidemic has declined - Onishchenko

19 th November 2009.

Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Russia Gennady Onishchenko said Thursday that several Russian regions, which were exceeded the epidemic threshold for influenza and SARS, began reducing the incidence ...

According to Onishchenko, this statistic gives "cautious optimism" on the development situation of avian influenza in Russia.

Told Interfax on Thursday the head of Rospotrebnadzor, less sick were in Moscow, Chita and Transbaykal Territory, Magadan Region, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Perm Krai, Sakhalin, Yakutia, Khabarovsk, Krasnoyarsk, Murmansk, Ulan-Ude, Ufa.

According to Onishchenko, the tendency to stabilize the situation on all types of influenza emerged also in Bryansk, Buryatia, Kaliningrad, and Ulyanovsk. As the chief medical officer, in most Russian regions the situation with influenza is doepidemicheskom level.

According to Onishchenko, vaccination against seasonal flu in Russia has already done more than 30 million people. In addition, a number of Russian regions is vaccinated against swine flu, despite the fact that epidemiologists warn of the danger to vaccinate in the midst of the epidemic.

Last Tuesday in MHSD warned that fraudsters selling vaccine, designed ostensibly to protect all types of influenza, including those from the virus A/H1N1. As noted in the department, such a vaccine in principle does not exist yet anywhere in the world.

Total in Russia, according to MHSD on Tuesday, in Russia zaafiksirovano 5613 cases of swine flu. In the acute form of 132 people sick. In the department did not report the total number of deaths since the exact reason why death is possible only through laboratory tests that is not always possible.

However MHSD note that the effects of influenza in Russia is dying "a small number of people." It is estimated that the media, a total of swine influenza have died already 30 Russians.

Recall that, Gennady Onishchenko, the tendency of the epidemic of influenza to reduce said for the past week. Chief sanitary doctor, never tires of promoting prevention measures and urged all Russians wear a mask. Previously, the drop in morbidity in Moscow officially reported and Rospotrebnadzor.

In the world, according to WHO, swine flu sick more than 500 thousand people, for 6,2 thousand people over fatal disease. At present, the epidemic continues to spread in Europe and Central Asia.
